This is one of those books that you will remember for a long, long time. Thordis is an extraordinary woman on an incredibly brave journey to find forgiveness and reconciliation with someone who did something most people would find unforgivable.Her writing style flows nicely, although as an artist she does seem prone to get a little flowery at points. (Some reviewers seem to interpret this as her being overly dramatic, but I think it is just an artist’s way of dealing with experiences that defy words). She is painfully honest, at times admitting to thoughts and feelings that wouldn’t fit with people’s expectations of how she should feel. But her willingness to admit to these feelings and her sense of conflict over them makes her more authentic and human.There are also some sections by Tom, the man who raped her. It is interesting to see into his experiences with guilt, with trying to help Thordis heal, and with his shifting attitude towards himself.If this book were a work of fiction I would call it unrealistic. But since this is two people telling a true story, I will call it (and them) amazing.

I have now read this book twice. It is by far one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Thordis and Tom take us on a journey unlike any other. It is beautiful, heart-wrenching, brave and groundbreaking. Having spent a lot of time reading, researching and working in the field of sexual assault I found this book compelling and eye opening. South of Forgiveness seeks to break down the shame and silence that perpetuates rape. I'm filled with awe and gratitude for the work it took them to get to the place where they could write this book.

This was truly a engaging and thought-provoking read. I started reading it and was so engaged that I finished it the same evening, in about three hours. As a therapist in training who is planning to work with survivors of trauma, I'm so glad that I stumbled upon the TED talk by Thordis and Tom that led me to this book. This was definitely not an easy read, but was absolutely a worthwhile read.

Bought this book after hearing the ted talk, was expecting more from it. The story is long winded, not as captivating as the shorter ted talk. Still happy I own it and I may revisit it in the future but as of now, struggled to get through the first third of the book.

The book is great! The disc however didn’t even work. Defective. I had to get it on Audible to listen to it. So the book itself is worth it. The audio disk is not. I went on vacation right after purchasing it and didn’t get back and listen to until after my return window has closed. The company was not nice about it. I’m stuck with a defective disk.

This book seemed as though was written to be a movie. I found authors writing to be tedious, lacking creativity. One saving factor is that she does reveal the lasting trauma for victims of date rape, rape in general. I did not finish book, could not stay with it could not do so.

This book is life changing. It challenges those who work with survivors to see things from a different perspective to better serve our survivors.

Deep conversations. Surprisingly subtle humor. Humans sometimes find awkward humor when things are serious. This is beautifully done in this book.

This book has been on my shelf for about 30 years. I bought it originally because I had met the author shortly before his death. I was working as a patient escort in the hospital where he was receiving treatment. He was well-mannered, but terribly bitter, which I suppose is understandable if one knows he’s dying of cancer. I had put off reading the book because I was afraid it would be a bitter book. Nothing could be more wrong. This is a book that is doggedly upbeat. Beth Harmon is a plain and unloved child who is put in an orphanage after her mother is killed in an auto accident. She lives a lonely life with only two friends. One is a tall black girl who is also unloved; the other is a secret friendship with the orphanage’s old janitor, who teaches her the game of chess. Chess is a life-saving and inspirational experience for her that she becomes obsessed with. She is a true prodigy with a natural gift for the game. It’s chess that gives her the only real joy in her life. But she also needs love and emotional support from other humans. In childhood, she begins using tranquilizers that were distributed free in the orphanage at first, until it was declared that they were unsafe. When they become unavailable she begins stealing them. She occasionally seals money, too. In her mid-teens her adoptive mother gives her a beer, which she takes to like a duck to water. Beth is a very believable character. I’m surprised that a male author could write such a convincing adolescent girl. The novel follows her chess career from playing with the janitor in the school basement to the major world tournament against the world’s top player, a Russian grand master, at the height of the Cold War. Can she beat him? Or will she fall prey to her addictions, as she has several times before? This is an extremely suspenseful drama that I had difficulty putting down. For sheer entertainment, I don’t think I’ve read anything that can beat it in at least ten years. And I know next to nothing about chess. This is book is beautiful and compassionate, as well as suspenseful. Five stars.

I had never heard of this author or this novel. A few weeks ago in the Sunday NY Times there was an interview with Ayelet Waldman (if my memory serves) and she answered a common question: what generally unknown book do you like and recommend?. It was this one. So I bought it and read it and it's wonderful. It is a lively story of a young girl being raised in a home for girls who is taught at age 8 to play chess by the janitor who lives in the basement. That's where it starts. Along the way she has unusual and fascinating friends and competitors and with her genius she makes her way up the chess ladder to great heights. Fascinating world is described and a wonderful character. Couldn't put it down.

This is a wonderful book about a remarkable character. "With some people chess is a pastime, with others it is a compulsion, even an addiction... every now and then a person comes along for whom it is a birthright." This person is Beth Harmon - "she is quiet and well-mannered. And (when she plays chess) she is out for blood..." She hates to lose.Beth Harmon was orphaned at the age of eight when her parents were killed in an automobile accident. She is placed in an orphanage in Kentucky that is almost a modern equivalent of a Dickensian orphanage, with children given tranquilisers twice a day to keep them calm and controllable - opening the gates to long-term addictions..One day when cleaning the board erasers in the basement for a teacher, Beth comes across an old janitor playing chess alone. After several attempts the janitor agrees to show her how to play chess, and she goes over the moves in her head during the lonely hours when she can't sleep. It takes three games for Beth to win her first game and in three months the janitor can no longer beat her. Then he gives her a book - "Modern Chess Openings" - and Beth is addicted to chess for life, playing chess movements and strategy in her mind in class and in bed at night.At thirteen she wins a local chess Tournament. With the help of her foster-mother by the age of sixteen she is competing in the US Open Championship. Her ultimate challenge is to go to Russia to face and beat the Russian world champions.While it helps to know something about chess is not important because the late Walter Tevis wrote in a way that even if you don't understand what is really happening you are part of the action and this keeps you on the edge of your seat, barracking for Beth. If you are a chess "expert" you might find errors in the game and strategic descriptions, but you need to remember that chess is the vehicle Tevis uses to tell us a wonderful tale that could also apply to almost any competitive game.The Queen's Gambit is a more than a story about chess - it is fundamentally a thriller with the same kind of adrenaline filled action that takes you into the heat of battle in a similar way that Bernard Cornwell takes you with Richard Sharpe into the heart of battles between the British and the French in the Napoleonic wars. All along I had to remind myself that chess is fundamentally a battlefield game between sides with a King and Queen, who live in castles protected by knights, supported by their Bishops, with an army of Pawns (soldiers). Let battle commence!This is an exciting and beautifully crafted book which had a profound effect on me emotionally. It has gone straight to my best list of best reads of 2015 and will stay in my memory for a long time. Highly recommended.

Five stars for a very compelling narrative about what it takes to be a winner. The price to be paid, the setbacks to be overcome, the prejudice and narrow mindedness to be suffered. And Five stars for Tevis' ability to transform an unlikely tail with an unlikely context (high level chess playing), the hackneyed cliche of the underdog, and the need of the reader to make a huge suspension of disbelief... The tension, anxiety and suspense moves from page to page. Hitchock couldn't have done it better as we turn the page waiting for the inevitable disaster. I can't recall a fictional character I was ever more invested in than this unlikely little girl.Sure the chess situations may be problematic: either because the reader hasn't played and feels he/she is missing something important, or the reader is a fairly competent player and is irritated by errors in the accounts. In the end it really doesn't matter because the chess playing is in her brilliant imagination, as she thinks about and plays the match. And this is her story. Not about chess.And she is a she in a game dominated, hitherto, by boys and men.Very inspiring story. Most thrilling read for me this year.

About the Author

Larry Newman is the Founder and Director of Children's Music Workshop. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education, cum laude degree from Temple University's College of Music, a California teaching credential and a Master of Arts in Music Performance from Eastern Illinois University. Formerly an instrumental music teacher in the Philadelphia School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, and Santa Monica-Malibu Public Schools, Mr. Newman has supervised music programs in more than eighty public and private institutions from the Kindergarten through college levels. His rich diversity of experience includes schools from East L.A. to Malibu and from South Central L.A. to the San Fernando Valley. Larry Newman was the recipient of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' 62nd Annual Los Angeles area Emmy award for Children/Youth Programming. Mr Newman wrote, directed and produced the All Schools Elementary Honor Orchestra shows which have aired nationally and feature students from more than two dozen Children's Music Workshop school programs. This was Mr. Newman's third Emmy win. He also received Emmys in 2009 and 2008 for those honor orchestra broadcasts and was most recently nominated in 2011 for a fourth Emmy for Orchestra Kids 2010. In 2009, Mr. Newman was honored by the Los Angeles City Council at City Hall for his contributions to music education in Los Angeles. He was also featured on CityView's Channel 35 series, "Faces of LA". Mr. Newman received the 2006 Lori Petrick Excellence in Education Award from the Palisades Charter Schools Foundation. The award is underwritten by the Boone Foundation - a philanthropic group whose mission is to support "passionate people who provide excellent programs to youth". Larry Newman was also one of 40 teachers nominated for the 2007 25th Annual BRAVO Award, established in 1982 by the Music Center of Los Angeles County to recognize individuals for innovation and excellence in arts education. It’s about time Star Wars ventures into the world of kids comics, and it does so spectacularly. Even adult fans will find something to like about this kiddie Star Wars tale.

My 4 year old nephew is a huge star wars and comics fan, he was so excited by the first comic I ordered. He loves this one ( even mom has to read it to him). Great gift for Star Wars fans.

A very quick read for younger readers. Pretty much what a Saturday morning Star Wars cartoon would be like.

Prefecty fine comic for parents wanting to introduce their kiddos to Star Wars, but ads nothing to canon.

My seven year old son loves star wars and has not been able to put down any and all star wars comics and graphic novels. Make sure you find ones that are official story if you want to stay consistent.

While I really enjoy the Marvel Star Wars comics aimed at older readers, I have completely fallen in love with the Star Wars Adventures series. While these comics are aimed at younger readers, they fill a niche for me completely separate from the Marvel series. Eschewing the longer, twisty-er sagas that Marvel publishes, Star Wars Adventures focuses on shorter, more straightforward, self-contained adventures that allow the characters to shine. This first volume opens with something of a prologue story, demonstrating the depth and breadth of adventures that can be told in the Star Wars universe. It follows up with a story of Rey and her time on Jakku, reminding readers of what was clearly on view in The Force Awakens: while Rey may be new to the greater galaxy beyond Jakku, she is a young woman who was perfectly capable of taking care of herself, long before she met Finn and Han Solo. We also get a couple of backup stories that tie into other periods of Star Wars mythology, and show us characters from other Star Wars media, including the Wild Space series of books for young readers, and Marvel's Star Wars comics. Throughout, the art is gorgeous; more stylized than the photorealistic art on display in other Star Wars comics, but no less faithful to the feel of the movies. Highly recommended.

Rely on the Big Book & 12 & 12 book. This manual is too limited and confusing. Good for the anylitical mind, not the spiritual mind. Looks like someone wrote this for the $$. Not the alcoholic.

Good book. A little brief perhaps. I have written in my log much more extensively about my experience and thoughts. But the step 4 worksheets are excellent, highly organized. Recommended if any one finds itself lost about where to begin. Like it.

Awsome work book. Very useful, like any work book it must have a text book to accompany it that why there the AA big book.The two go hand in hand. You can't have one without the other. The steps are in the big book, the work book for example page 3 Step 2 tells you to go in the AA big book(pps. 26-27 of Aa's Big Book). The 4th step inventory pages are the best I have seen. I worked 4th step inventory before the ones I have worked in the past had check boxes that left me feeling as if something was left undone. I been working using 4th step in the work book wright in a note book not my work book. I wright the questions then answer in a note book.Keeping my work book like new.

This made an otherwise boring topic (in my opinion) fairly palatable. Ironically, this book laid out HRM so well that I realized I didn't want a job in that field and so I dropped my Human Resources class and continued reading the book. I really liked the real-world examples (tons of name-dropping) embedded in the text, and the many charts helped me get through what is kind of a dense subject. Good chapter summaries too. Even though I ended up dropping my Human Resources Management class, I skimmed through the book and read some sections thoroughly because there's a lot of good information in there, and it's pretty well-written for a textbook. I feel like it's helped prepare me for working after college graduation, as now I'm caught up on lots of legal cases and acts relevant to knowing my employee rights, HRM purpose/activities, and management theory. I can articulate my complaints a little better, if nothing else! I reference this book at least monthly while just chatting about work with friends while, usually criticizing management techniques or suggesting someone go talk to HR because of things I read in that book.

This book has a gazillion typos. While the content is good, the publisher should do better. I think I should get my money back for having to navigate the annoying typos, but the publisher said no.

There are simply too many typographical and grammatical errors to be found in this book. It could potentially be a great piece of resource material on Human Resource Management, but the lack of editing leaves me questioning credibility.

The book has MANY grammatical errors which really surprised me since its a published textbook. It's hard for me to smoothly read this text when there are so many grammatical errors that result in me having to re-read sentences over and over to understand.

Had it for my Human Resources class, and it was easy to understand, just a lot of information. Totally love that the vocab is colored highlighted and put on the side of the page for easy access.

Rented the book. In ok condition but what i really care about is the content. No pages were damaged. Would highly recommend students to rent books for school!

Mary Prince dictated her history to a white woman in England, where she finally claimed her freedom after a life of horrendous abuse under several masters.Her narration is part of an anti-slavery pamphlet that contains other fascinating documents as well: a letter from her last master viciously defaming her character and a presentation of evidence to refute this calumny by Thomas Pringle, Secretary of Britain's Anti-Slavery Society.Among other events, Mary's history includes daily beatings by sadistic masters who, while entrusting her with considerable responsibility, punished the tiniest fault with insane cruelty. It describes her ten-year stint working long hours in the salt ponds of Turk's Island, labor that broke her health. It shows her growing attraction to religion and her attempts to receive spiritual instruction.I found this book compelling on two levels: as a detailed personal account of the appalling oppression of black slaves in the West Indies - and as a look at the compassionate work of anti-slavery activists. Those who opposed slavery had to have their wits about them, for the slave owners were greatly debased by their unholy power over other humans and would stoop to any chicanery to defend their position.Mary Prince's history triggered a lawsuit and countersuit when it was published in 1831. It was instantly in great demand by the public and was of great value to the Anti-Slavery Society in their campaign against the slave trade.I recommend this book both as a classic of Black history and an unforgettable story.

I thought it was well written. I still to this day don't understand slavery. How could people be so mean and horrible to another human being?

This book is a great primary source read that gives an in-depth image of the life of Mary Prince. From the transporting between colonies and England, to the violence endured, and being passed from family to family - Mary Prince remains hopeful of her situation and also for her future as a wife. The book directly engages the reader and provides not only information about the life of a Black female slave, but also humanizes Mary as a woman rather than just a slave as many accounts and even history tends to classify them as.

This is an excellent memoir, albiet painful to read in certain parts. This is a must-read for history buffs--particularly those interested in the Caribbean and the system of slavery in the British colonies.

I'm reading this with my 12-year old daughter, and we both are really enjoying it -- if "enjoying" can be applied to the context of witnessing through literature the torture and enslavement of human beings as their oppressors smugly walk around with absolutely no accountability for their heinous deeds. My daughter chose to read this book in her free time today. It is very engrossing.The first part of this book is about the life of Mary Price. The second is what happens when an abolitionist in England champions her cause, and how returning home as a free woman to her husband is made impossible by her vindictive "master." The final section is the firsthand account of a boy in Africa kidnapped into slavery and what happens to him after his ship is blown to England instead of to his intended destination.I highly recommend this book in general. I would also recommend it other parents wanting to help educate their middle schooler about the history of the enslavement of African peoples by the West. The stories are too disturbing for elementary school children, and the vocabulary would be too advanced.

Had to read this for a college coarse. It was a good and well written book. Opened my eyes to the slave trade more.

I lost 25 pounds in 3 weeks, without doing all the exercises.

Bob Harper presents a very reasonable and detailed 3 week plan. He is very explicit in stating that this is a jumpstart only; not a life plan. He provides meals with recipes as well as a workout plan. My only complaint is that the meals and the recipes are not listed together and there isn't an index provided to go quickly from both, at least on the kindle version.

Followed this for a week. Lost seven pounds. Took a day or two to not feel hungry, but really, I didn't mind and did feel better eating healthy. I like the electrolyte replacement powder he recommends, and some of his recipes are REALLY delicious. Others I did not care for, but you can pick and choose. I found that some of the recipes were actually more food than I could eat at one meal. My husband ate what I cooked and he liked most of the dishes, even tho' he was not trying to lose weight.If you are determined to lose some weight, I'd recommend using this for a week or two to get yourself off to a fast start and then transition to his Skinny Rules regimen. I've since lost another two pounds with the SR, even going out to eat a few times. His rules make sense and lead to an overall healthier diet - so you will be able to maintaiin your weight after you've reached your goal.My daughter lost 30 pounds follwing Bob Harper's Skinny Rules, and has kept if off for many months, because she changed her formally unhealthy eating habits, maintains an exercise routine, and still manages to go out for drinks and dinner with friends, etc. It is all a balance and the SR is a guideline that works.

A three week program - I thought -no problem. Well let me tell you, that first week was tough. And to make matters worse, on my start day I developed muscle spasms in my back and could barely walk. But I was determined that it could work without too much exercise. I remember at day 2 thinking "19 to go".By the end of week one, I had not had a diet soda, piece of bread, sweets, no milk in coffee, etc. I was following it to the letter. I was determined. And I was not missing any of it. It really makes you think about how much and what you are eating!!!After 21 days, without exercise, I lost a whole dress size.If put your mind to it and follow the plan, it will work. Thanks Bob!

this diet was delicious to follow- yes it takes time and effort but I feel much better following this plan- I've lost about 10 lbs (was hoping for more) but I really feel good - cutting out breads and carbs is what I needed to do.the recipes are so easy and its all the food I love to eat anyway. I just needed a reminder how and what to eat-I really think this is not a 3 week diet but a diet you can follow for life- I am not hungry at all and the meals are very satisfying.

The recipes are great but sometimes include lots of ingredients that do not repeat in the weekly diet set in Bob's plan. This plan was too expensive to follow long term and I found myself hungry more often than not. I found much more success by completing a Whole30 and continuing to follow many of the Whole30 rules in my daily diet.
