It's that good. She's that good."―John Scalzi, Wall Street Journal on The Stone Sky"[N. K. Jemisin] has pretty well conquered [the epic fantasy scene] with the Broken Earth."―The New York Times on The Stone Sky"Jemisin deliberately refuses to provide easy answers: they're simply not available, in this world or ours. Painful and powerful."―Kirkus (starred review) on The Stone Sky"Vivid characters, a tautly constructed plot, and outstanding worldbuilding meld into an impressive and timely story of abused, grieving survivors fighting to fix themselves and save the remnants of their shattered home."―Publishers Weekly (starred review) on The Stone Sky"The depth and breadth of Jemisin's achievement with this trilogy is geologic. It's no wonder why all three books won Hugo awards. This series is exceptional. It is all the things I want in a story. It is fantasy and cataclysm. It does something new with magic and the apocalypse. It is deep and dark and true. It has meaning and excitement. I'm talking jerk up from your perfect comfy reading position because a body must be bolt upright to read something this intense excitement.

This is such a great story, with exceptionally strong and deep characters, and a constructed world that is very novel, yet easily understandable. The danger warning is based on my experience of not being able to put the books down until the wee hours on several nights. But we'll worth it.

I saw so much hype about these books that I wondered how it could possibly live up to the accolades? But it was even better than I had hoped. Jemisin's world-building is meticulous; The Stillness is sufficiently earth-like to be easily imagined yet different enough to engage one's imagination. And the books are still very much character-driven. One comparison to the Broken Earth Trilogy would be the movie Cloud Atlas-- a story where characters' lives inter-twine across multiple time frames. This is intelligent fiction, where multiple hero's journeys combine with gradually unfolding unveiling of mysteries. Reading the whole trilogy is almost akin to growing up; the reader sees the same subjects but understands them more as the tales progress. Another comparison would be the complexity of the Fire and Ice series (AKA Game of Thrones) but with layers of complexity exploring privilege and prejudice. Topics of racism, gender, and class divisions are explored in a thorough and complex manner: exploring not just how people hate, but why they do so. On top of all those layers add themes of ecology and (not kidding) geology. Somehow, this all comes together as a page turner. And finally, IMO, the ending was perfect. Conclusions are the hardest part of fiction writing so I've been repeatedly disappointed reading novels that don't end as well as the rest of the book. But on this whole trilogy, Jemisin scores a touchdown at the end. There is going to be a film adaptation, and I'm a bit concerned that nothing cinematic can live up to the incredible experience of 'seeing' the Broken Earth books in my imagination.

A very unique and original addition to the genre that does not disappoint with its fantasy elements or engaging plot. Many SFF books fail to deliver both a a believable realm and believable characters but The broken Earth Trilogy does both seamlessly; some of the most memorable characters of this book will stay with me a long long time. The mystery builds and develops beautifully and each book seems to deliver more than the last. I can't recommend this book enough to fans of SSF books, it is such a rare find. If you have been reading in this genre for any length of time you will recognize how unique this series is!

This is one of those books that makes you wonder how one author can have SO MUCH in their beautiful mind. This series gripped me from the beginning and was super absorbing and satisfying, right up to the end. Not since Tolkien or Lewis has I encountered a world so achingly real and complex. Read these books!!!

This series received a ton of great reveiws and awards. I ordered with anticipation of a great read. Fifteen pages in the narration switches to second person.I don't care for second person. I find it annoying. $25 wasted.Maybe I'll give it a shot someday, but I've got enough things to do and too many things I can't control that I find annoying. There's no reason to invite another pain to the party.

The first novel was brilliant, a tour de force of world-making. True, the second-person pronouns confused me but as the three narratives converged toward the end it all made sense. Now I find this convention tiring in the extreme.... and confusing. She killed Alabaster? I didn't pick that up. Essun is 'you' and Syenite is 'she'? The characters are often vibrant but I lose track of who is who.And maybe there's a bit of shark-jumping in the Obelisk Gate as 'magic' is introduced, the 'silver', inconsistent powers that are all over the map, murders that get breezed over. It all has become a bit much for me.

This is top notch sci-fi / fantasy! I loved this series so much that I purchased copies for all of my family members as Christmas presents. It’s that good!

Gravity: An Introduction to Einstein's General Relativity

From the Back Cover

The aim of this groundbreaking new book is to bring general relativity into the undergraduate curriculum and make this fundamental theory accessible to all physics majors. Using a "physics first" approach to the subject, renowned relativist James B. Hartle provides a fluent and accessible introduction that uses a minimum of new mathematics and is illustrated with a wealth of exciting applications. The emphasis is on the exciting phenomena of gravitational physics and the growing connection between theory and observation. The Global Positioning System, black holes, X-ray sources, pulsars, quasars, gravitational waves, the Big Bang, and the large scale structure of the universe are used to illustrate the widespread role of how general relativity describes a wealth of everyday and exotic phenomena.

About the Author

James B. Hartle was educated at Princeton University and the California Institute of Technology where he completed a Ph.D. in 1964. He is currently Professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His scientific work is concerned with the application of Einstein's relativistic theory of gravitation (general relativity) to realistic astrophysical situations, especially cosmology. Professor Hartle has made important contributions to the understanding of gravitational waves, relativistic stars, and black holes. He is currently interested in the earliest moments of the Big Bang where the subjects of quantum mechanics, quantum gravity, and cosmology overlap. He has visited Cambridge often since 1971 and has collaborated closely with Stephen Hawking over many years, most notably on their famous "no boundary proposal" for the origin of the universe. Professor Hartle is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is a past director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara.

I'm studying GR on my own because it's so interesting and I'm an amateur Astronomer. I really love this book. It's just right for me, though can still be a challenge when it comes to Tensors etc. I'm a software engineer, pretty good with math, but not a physicist. I heartily recommend this book to anyone motivated to better understand Gravity and General Relativity. The author doesn't drop GR on you without tons of excellent preparation. The Einstein Equation doesn't even show up until PART III, after all the prerequisites, and when he does explain it, he does it very well with both words and equations in an excellent balance.I also have a two books from the 70s: MTW ("Gravitation" by Wheeler, Thorne, and Miser) which is colorful and entertaining and has many terrific diagrams, but it's huge, heavy, and a bit overwhelming for self study. Weinberg's "Gravitation and Cosmology" is very different than MTW, hardly an illustration in the whole book, pretty dense math, less focused on Geometry... but it's a classic and it's nice to try another perspective, but it's also harder to learn from, IMHO. I probably shouldn't compare these two with modern textbooks, but I wanted to mention these classics.Hartle's book is modern and definitely easier to learn from than the books mentioned above. I'm not sure how it compares to Schutz or Wald, but I can say this book is just right for anyone with decent a math background, and the necessary focus, interest, and motivation. Heck you could probably skip the math and still get a lot out of it.I'll also mention "Exploring Black Holes: Introduction to General Relativity", a workbook from Taylor, Wheeler, et al, which I picked some years ago has been helpful and interesting. It walks through examples, such as the Advance of the Perihelion of Mercury etc. I just ordered Zee's "Gravity in a Nutshell" and "A Most Incomprehensible Thing" by Peter Collier... I heard they're very good. I'm not sure I want to spend $150 on Carroll's GR book, though I really like his lectures and audiobooks. Textbooks are selling for crazy money these days. Not sure who can afford to go to college anymore!Big thumbs up for this book!

An excellent introduction to general relativity: it's well written, all the ideas are explained at an intuitive level and with an easy-to-understand language; furthermore no mathematical prerequisites of high level are requested. In particular, a first part is a review of special relativity: a not so brief and very good summary, useful to understand the use of the 4-vector notation, too. A successive part is committed to the general relativity foundations (the way which Einstein developed the idea in), the mathematical structure and the analysis of many observations (such as gravitational lensing, cosmic microwave background radiation, universe expansion, etc.) that give confirmations of the theory (with an additional introduction to some cosmological models). A final part is committed to Einstein equation: tensor analysis, curvature, covariant derivative are introduced at this point, and you'll be got up enough to understand all the concepts.Very good binding and hardcover: it's durable and solid, with a good value for money.

I used this book for my Relativity & Black Holes course at UCI, an upper-division undergrad intro to SR & GR. The book uses an experimental approach by leading with observations and consequences of the equations of relativity without rigorous derivation. This is counter to the standard approach in physics, which is usually to derive the equations of motion, then move on to application and comparison to observation. If you're a math grad eager to apply your knowledge of differential geometry/topology then this is not the book for you're looking for. It is designed for advanced undergrad physicists to get a handle on the ideas and consequences of Einsteins theory before considering the very mathematically complicated derivations. The problems are incredibly challenging and solutions are not easy to come by. This textbook is definitely a keeper.

My personal favorite GR book. More physics and interesting topics than Schutz, though perhaps too much about experiments. Luckily you can skip those parts if you want. Also this is a true introduction, unlike Carroll's book, which unless you are fluent in differential geometry is really more of a second course.

My husband said he wanted to read this book slowly because he didn't want the story to end. If we were billionaires, we would give each member of the Coast Guard a million bucks for their courage and bravery in saving lives in raging seas. We would give another million bucks to Michael J. Tougias for putting into words this amazing story and so many others that are well worth reading. They are priceless.Jeannie Walker (Award-Winning Author) "Fighting the Devil" - A True Story of Consuming Passion, Deadly Poison and Murder

I am a huge fan of non-fiction tales of rescue, derring-do, and adventure. This one is at the top of the pile, as far as my expectations of what is promised goes. Michael J. Tougias is to be lauded for this story. It is one thing to write of the actual rescue feat, it is quite another to add the background of each character, each piece of history, each task of rescue, and to include the physical and spiritual aspects of the sea itself.. Tougias delivers. I feel as if I now have many new friends; the sailors, the Coast Guard crews, the spirit of the Gulf Stream. My brother, now 69, was rescued by the Coast Guard when he was 5, along with my father and god-father, when their 28-foot sea skiff lost all power and drifted more than 24 hours in the Atlantic off the New Jersey coast. Needless to say, Jack joined up when he was 18 and served more than 5 years with the Coast Guard until a spinal injury forced his retirement from active duty. So any rescue adventure that shows the heroism of that branch of the armed services gets my attention. Short story: This is a very good read!

This book is so well-written that it kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last! This wasn't just a book about men in peril, but it was also about the incredible training that goes into the Coast Guard Search and Rescue people. You are there in the boat with the men who are caught in the nightmare of 80 foot waves being tossed about like a ping pong ball and their narrow escape when it ultimately sinks. The men who are sent to rescue them had never seen anything like the "storm" (which may have been better described as a hurricane), and how the swimmer barely made it out with his life. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I stayed up until 5:30 a.m. to finish this book. What happens is almost unbelievable. The survivors embody the best of humanity. The Coast Guard, well, I had respect for them before this book since I live on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but this story puts their search and rescue teams into a mythical level of courage, professionalism and makes them all heroes in my opinion. If you want a cliffhanger that keeps you reading on, this is the book for you. Of course, I hope no one gets into a perilous position at sea, but if it were me, and I knew the Coasties were coming, I would say prayers of gratitude before I even heard or saw the helicopter. Truly amazing!

Guys can sure tell a whale of a tale! Rescue swimmer, Derek Dazzo did not get all the accolades he deserves and I hope he is fully recovered by now.If he never does another rescue, he goes down as one of the most inspiring men I have ever had the chance to come across. (I can't swim and have committed to learn this year). If he does not get a Citizens medal for his inhuman efforts, no one should. The very best to you. If I were a member of the armed forces, I'd salute you.

gripping tale of rescue on the high seas. the author, quite skillfully grabs the reader's attention and never lets go. as an added treat there is independent footage of the actual rescue on YouTube, but my advice is to not watch it until the reader has finished the book. the video footage will have a much more significant meaning and impact.

Well-written story of man against the elements, in this case 70-130 foot waves in the dark destroying their sail boat. Did you know that one ship a week disappears into the ocean? You can see videos of the rescue on YouTube. Great adventure reading.

This was one of the 5 books I have recently read by Tougias, his detailed descriptions of everything that happens almost minute to minute and the translation of witnesses to the events to your mind is so vivid that you think you are actually there in the scene, I have a new profound respect for our heroes of the coast guard because of Tougias, I found myself wishing I was years younger so I could be a part of something this magnificent in bravery to save another's life.

Purchased for Tome Reading Bowl. This was really hard to read for my 9 YO because of all the Indian words. The story is interesting and it’s great that it teaches about a true place (we were interested enough to research further) but it was just too difficult to read for her age.

What a lovely book! This story contained rich, authentic sensory details that made Chandigarh come alive and seem "real" in my mind's eye as I read. Jennifer Bradbury, who taught in India and adopted her son there, was clearly familiar enough with Indian culture to write from a place of sensitivity and authenticity while also making all she wrote about make sense for American readers. Further, her ability to braid Ram's story with Rama's mythical story felt seamless and satisfying and gave the book a timeless, enduring quality. I was not familiar with the stories attached to Diwali before reading this book, and I found it satisfying to learn more. I also found the relationships in the book heartwarming as Ram's difficult social and economic situation was made bearable by his friendships with kind adults who had the means and heart to help him. Bradbury is a talented writer and was not heavy-handed in conveying the importance of community and other such valuable themes. Highly recommended!

I didn’t expect to be captivated by this story, set in today’s India. It opens with a boy named Ram playing a street game called gilli against a big ugly pack leader. But I quickly grew entranced as the tale took me out of the city into the nearby jungle, where an unknown artist was crafting odd statues made of recycled materials. And I learned, with Ram, the famous ancient story of Rama, which inspired him to make difficult decisions. Through this fictional story, which compelled me forward with its constant tension and mystery, I found out about the real-life Nek Chand, whose once-secret sculpture garden now attracts visitors from all over the world.I highly recommend this well-crafted book, a finalist for the Washington State Book Award.

A very engaging story. Hard to put down. Approachable for all ages.
