This is the best book I've read on penny rugs. You know how you buy craft books sometimes and you only find maybe one project that you actually want to do? That's definitely not the case with this book. I'm already well into making the large rug on the right-hand side of the cover and there are other projects in the book that I'll do as well. There isn't one wasted page in this book!! I feel like I received every penny's worth when I purchased this book. It really does show that craft books can be inspiring and affordable at the same time. I wish I had this kind of success with every craft book I ordered. The instructions are simply put and easy to follow. Many thanks to the author for writing this!!

This book is lovely. The pictures are inspirational and the author admits that she had made her first one with felt squares. It is funny because the first book I had purchased had one view and no instructions and while waiting for it to come in, I had gone out and purchased felt squares to use for practice. Needless to say, I still had them when this book came in and I was immediately able to start a first project. It has many projects from the development of the craft and exactly what I was looking for. As I work on my skills on felt squares and small projects I will look for wool that can be used to make a larger project for my dining room table. This book is inspiring!

I had been looking for a book on traditional penny rugs with their history. This book fulfilled this requirement and then some. It covers the various styles with clear instructions. Also, included some photos of antique versions. I found it useful for recreating a traditional rug and demonstrating the craft in a historic setting.

This is an excellent book about penny rugs. It begins by giving a historical context for these lovely wool applique "rugs" and contains great photographs of finished rugs. The next part is an easy to follow tutorial on making penny rugs from start to finish. The photos again are outstanding. The book provides templates for pennies and patterns for several designs. I highly recommend Penny Rugs: Sewing Wool Applique to any one interested in beginning this craft.

This is a very practical book. It gives any new or older minister in the ministry some things to think about. My favorite chapter is the one when Martin describes some of the answers he would like to give, but perhaps shouldn't. The answers are the result of questions because someone just found out martin was a minister. I do, however, wish the two authors would have devoted a chapter purely to their bios. One paragraph devoted to their childhood, high school, college and first two years of full-time ministry for example. Yes, some of this was covered in other chapters, but the focus of the chapters was not their bio summary.

This was an outstanding book that hits topics I have never read about in this way. A seminary professor here recommended it for our class, and I can see why. 5 stars because it made my cry, laugh, and read it out loud multiple times. The wisdom and reflection that went into this shows me that God was and is with them. Will be sending this to a few of my friends who will appreciate it. Honestly, I bet anyone in a church setting could appreciate this.

Being in pastoral ministry can be difficult and yet incredibly wonderful. It is as if the writers were in my head at differ not points if my life, and I was encouraged by their wisdom, wit and honesty. If you are in ministry, thinking of going into ministry, or married to a minister, this is a great book to read.

This book held my interest because of the two authors giving their perspective on life in the ministry. I am a church member and this book gave me insight as to what a minister may be thinking,feeling and experiencing. I think it would be a good book for any church member to read. It makes a person remember that ministers are "just regular people"!I bought this book for a young lady in my church who is going in to ministry and suggested to her it would be a good read to keep her grounded in this vocation.

As a fellow clergy person, I found many of the essays within this text engaging and relatable. The authors have clear voices in how they write. I found the topics interesting, and certainly laughed to myself at familiar moments that I have experienced as well. This is a good read for those who want to learn more about what the life of a minister is like, or for those on a track to hearing their call.

A relatively bizarre book. The two authors write of unique experiences they have had in the course of their ministries. If you are like me, you will relate to some stuff, find some stuff amusing, and some downright controversial. This would be a good book to discuss with fellow workers in professional/lay ministry.

I owe a lot to my major professor at Drake University, Dr. Dale Miller. For instance, he insisted that this undergraduate, pre-ministerial, student buy and read Reinhold Niebuhr's Leaves from the Notebook of a Tamed Cynic. It's a diary the famous theologian kept during his thirteen successful years as a German Evangelical pastor in Detroit during the second and third decades of the past century. In Leaves, we see the burgeoning of the social consciousness that would propel Niebuhr into the front ranks of Christian Social Ethicists in the twentieth century. My favorite, entry, however, is one in which he describes his ambivalence as he attempts to make home calls. In those days, pastors could walk to their parishioners' homes. Niebuhr circled the block a couple of times before summoning the nerve to ring the doorbell.Every pastor, at least at the beginning of our ministries, has experienced similar feelings. The booklearnin' is over, the seminars finished, even the field education and Clinical Pastoral Education are in the past. Now the rubber hits the road, and we find out what we are made of in the day-to-day interactions with our people. Daniel and Copenhaver's delightful and disturbing book is the Leaves of a couple of current generations of pastors. Ministry has been in a process of changing over the forty years since I was ordained in the early nineteen-seventies. Pastoral care was emphasized heavily in my seminary. So was biblical preaching (which is not what many laypeople mean when they use the term). Finally, I discovered my talents as a teacher and a writer, and these three emphases formed the foundation for my ministry. Today's pastor may or may not be a seminary graduate. She is as likely to be pursuing a second, or even third, career. He will be proficient in the use of the Internet and multimedia in day-to-day communication and in the presentation of the Gospel in venues that range from the sanctuary to YouTube. S/he will be subject to the same economic pressures that affect laypeople, and the financial support ministers of my generation enjoyed will likely not be as available (seminary debt may be crushing, and more and more congregations are insisting that the pastor pay his/her own health insurance and/or retirement from an ever-shrinking compensation package).That Daniel and Copenhaver can bridge these differences of generation and expertise with wisdom, humor, and insight is a credit to their considerable abilities. They are different people, and not just in gender. Daniel is a senior pastor in a Chicago suburb. Copenhaver has been in a similar role for many years in New England. Daniel comes from a largely non-religious background, saw her parents divorced, and played for a time in a rock band. Copenhaver is the son of a highly-respected Congregationalist pastor, and his love and admiration for his deceased father are obvious. That these two are among the most admired and respected pastors in our denomination, the United Church of Christ, is perhaps symbolic of the inclusivity practiced here. Their book moves in a series of relatively short chapters, each author alternating, and several have been published in other venues, especially the Christian Century. They deal with everything from the inevitable, and sometimes interminable, meetings to a health crisis of one's own. The great strength of the book is that neither author romanticizes his or her work. People, including Daniel and Copenhaver, are present with warts intact, and graces as well. So is God.

What a great concept - sharing their lives openly.This book was interesting and funny.For those who put their clergy on a pedestal and out of reach. They are human and approachable, just like the rest of us..They also have the same needs, short comings and feelings as the rest of us.Most were called by God to be his stewards and not only bare their own burdens, but ours.These two are AWESOME!!!

About the Author

Karen A. Becker, Ph.D., has taught developmental courses for more than 20 years and presently serves as coordinator of the Reading and Study Skills Center at Youngstown State University. She taught developmental reading and writing courses, as well as education courses, at a number of Ohio two- and four-year colleges and universities. As a program director and curriculum designer for the Business and Industry Division at Columbus State Community College, she helped start a summer college for elementary and middle school students. Dr. Becker has continued to create similar programs serving under-resourced college students from Ohio and New Mexico, in addition to early college high school students using Getting Ahead. Her research interests include the use of reading and writing as vehicles for learning, which she has been sharing with college faculty and staff through professional development. A certified trainer in A Framework for Understanding Poverty and Bridges Out of Poverty, Dr. Becker is uniquely familiar with the challenges facing under-resourced postsecondary students. Karla M. Krodel, M.B.A., holds an undergraduate nursing degree from the University of Pittsburgh, as well as a master s degree from Kent State University. In her current position as director of the Youngstown State University Metro Credit Education Outreach, she helps create partnerships that bring college programs to under-served populations. YSU trained 300 college and trade school students in the Getting Ahead concepts. Previously Ms. Krodel was a charge nurse on inpatient psychiatric units, a program coordinator in county health department clinics, and director of a regional lead poison program. More recently she joined the YSU staff as a grant writer, workforce development program director, and research associate in the Urban Studies Department. Ms. Krodel is also a certified trainer in the Bridges Out of Poverty program, a key resource in the creation of this book. Bethanie H. Tucker, Ed.D., is a trainer and consultant with a diverse career in education spanning nearly four decades, including teaching positions in elementary classrooms, Title I reading, gifted education, and adjunct faculty at the University of Virginia. Since 1990 she has been a professor of education at Averett University. Author of several books, she is the creator of Tucker Signing Strategies, an approach to teaching letter-sound recognition to struggling readers. This technique has been introduced to teachers in most U.S. states, as well as Australia and China. Dr. Tucker s training and consulting expertise includes reading-related presentations, A Framework for Understanding Poverty, Learning Structures, and Under-Resourced Learners. Formerly a full-need scholarship college student herself, she made it through thanks to caring professors who provided the resources she needed to succeed. Dr. Tucker s experiences, along with the research of Dr. Ruby Payne and other scholars worldwide, constitute the foundation for her contributions to this book.

Excellent book that helps clarify why just pouting in more money does not solve the poverty issue or help under resrouded students make it the professional world. Also leads to understanding as to why it is difficult to change one's economic class.

This book is a must-read!

Although I do not teach under-resourced students in college, over the last 15 years, I have had experience tutoring/mentoring under-resourced students in elementary schools. But as I was reading Understanding and Engaging Under-Resourced College Students, I found myself underlining extensively, because I could relate what I observed in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, to what Dr. Karen Becker et all, described in their book.The book is well written, well documented, and clearly shows deep understanding and empathy for these students. It explains the 4 major cause of poverty, and the economic, cultural and language barriers. It explains the importance of of connecting these students with their middle class colleagues through investigative curriculum, engagement with the college community, and the community at large. It explains the importance of educating the students about the resources available to them within he college and the community at large.I feel that this book is a must read, a requirement, for anyone teaching under-resourced students at any level. Only through understanding and trough developing appropriate teaching models, we can decrease, or even eliminate students' suspension, drop outs, and sad outcomes. So many good recipes that are divided up by the main ingredient so it is easy to make meals based on what you feel like eating or what you happen to have in the fridge. There are chicken recipes, beef, pork, fish, and vegetarian. There are also some dessert recipes that are really good.I like that there is no space wasted on breakfast recipes. I don't like cooking breakfasts in the air fryer it seems like a waste of time and I don't have much time in the morning. Instead there are 100 recipes all of which are usable and quite different from each other. I think this book could last for years since every recipe I've made is one I would love to eat again. Highly, highly recommend this air fryer cookbook!

There are so many air fryer cookbooks on Amazon and so many of them are just awful, like they're missing instructions, ingredients, pictures, or health information. This cookbook fills the need for an actual high quality air fryer cookbook. The recipes are amazing and the cookbook is professional quality. Well written instructions, pictures for every recipe, and lists of macronutrients like fat and carbs so you always know how healthy the food is you are eating.

Pro: The book is divided by topic -- beef, chicken, fish, pork, vegetarian -- and the recipes include basic, common ingredients, nothing too wild that requires Google searches. There is a picture and nutritional information for each recipe.Con: The pictures are in black and white, so they don't add a tremendous amount of value.

It is a well constructed tale literally wise. It gives insight in the common speech and language of the English People in Dicken's time. It brings to remembrance words I have not heard for several years. I started reading Dickens after reading an article about his works being dropped from College Courses as they were too complicated for modern readers. I did not find them complicated but very refreshing reading and much above a lot of the garbage of modern writers.

I thought I'd never buy anything from Focus on the Family, but the production is really good. Fans of British sitcoms will recognize actor Geoffrey Palmer as Mr. Brownlow. He played Lionel Hardcastle in As Time Goes By (1992-2002) with Judi Dench. Of course, all the voice actors do an outstanding job communicating the intrigue, sarcasm, moral conflicts, and social inequalities of the novel.However, the production does reflect an additional, curious irony: lots of violence, but no cussing. In the book, Oliver suffers physical and psychological abuse as an orphan, a child laborer, and a child criminal. The audio presentation is unsparing in its depiction of this sadistic underworld of Industrial England, but don't expect the novel's occasional profanity.Most of the time, the intensity of the criminal characters, such as Fagin, Monks, and Bill Sikes, covers the fact that all the actors are minding their verbal manners, but it does seem odd that Mr. Bumble isn't allowed to famously protest "...the law is a ass --a idiot," (sic). Instead, Focus on the Family uses the lesser known novel quote "...the law is a bachelor..."At any rate, the five CDs include an interpretive foreword and afterword, which serve as bookends of the Radio Theatre production. There's also a DVD of a behind-the-scenes look, as well as a documentary about the "modern day Olivers" of the foster care system. The set makes a great gift --for yourself, as well as someone else.

Poor Oliver Twist has quite a tough life in the beginning. He is an orphan who is brought up in one bad home after another with pretty much no love at all. Like Harry Potter and many other sympathetic characters, Oliver's youth is not one to be envied. The tale primarily deals with his early life for the first half until he is drawn in with a band of criminals and makes a few friends and meets a few good people along the way until befalling a near tragedy. The second half of the book is more about the other characters involved in his saga.Oliver Twist starts off very down and gloomy in many parts and while that scenery doesn't change, the tone definitely does toward the end. It is worth reading for sure and another tome in the classics of Charles Dickens. This version contains some illustrations as well which were very well done and appropriate.

I've always loved the story of Oliver Twist-now I finally have an illustrated copy I'm even happier. This book is an unabridged copy and is searchable-a great feature. The cover has a picture of Oliver, all ragged with his little bundle. The table of contents takes you to Charles Dickens' preface, which is well worth reading, and to any chapter in the book. Alas, it does not take you to any of the illustrations, but they are beautifully rendered and very clear. I have the most basic Kindle and I have no trouble seeing all of the detail in the illustrations. The chapter headings list not only the number of the chapter, but the brief description Dickens wrote for each chapter, so that if you want to find a particular spot-say, when Oliver runs away to London, you can see that Chapter VIII has the summary "Oliver walks to London. He encounters on the road a strange sort of young gentleman." This makes it very easy to go to any part of the book you want to read.Warning: SPOILERS!!!!The story is one of a poor orphan boy, sold to an undertaker and abused until he runs away to London. He falls in with thieves and through a strange twist of fate is rescued by the man who was his father's best friend. It's a long story, filled with reversals of fortune and amazing coincidences, and although it has a happy ending, there is some genuine tragedy. It's a very sad scene when Oliver returns to the orphanage to get his best friend, Dick, who saw him off on his journey to London, only to find that Dick has died of untreated sickness. The prostitute, Nancy, has all the attributes of a character in a Greek tragedy-you desperately want her to leave the streets and her brutal boyfriend, Bill Sikes, and when she refuses to go, you have a sinking feeling that she isn't going to last much longer. When he beats her to death in their little room, it's a gruesome scene, but not a surprising one. The only relief from Fagin's gang comes from Charley, who reforms and leaves London to become a grazier.A word about Fagin-some might find the constant description of him as "the Jew" offensive. It is not meant as a pejorative, but rather as a handy label to define the arch-criminal. While it is true that Fagin is constantly described as a Jew and is one of the most repulsive Jewish characters in literature, it was not Dickens' intent to cast slurs upon Jewish people. He wrote in good faith and was troubled later, after becoming friends with Eliza Davis, the wife of the Jewish banker he sold his London house to, by the way he had portrayed Fagin. Eliza wrote to him in 1863 that she considered the way Dickens had portrayed Fagin a great wrong to the Jewish people. Dickens started to revise Oliver Twist, removing over 180 instances of the word "Jew" from the first edition text. He also ommitted sterotypical caricature from his public readings of Oliver Twist and a contemporary report noted, "There is no nasal intonation; a bent back but no shoulder-shrug: the conventional attributes are omitted." Dickens was finally able to write to Eliza, "There is nothing but good will left between me and a People for whom I have a real regard and to whom I would not willfully have given an offence." Fagin might still give offense to those looking for it, but personally I have always seen him as an example of a bad man, not a Jewish man, and I believe that is how Dickens meant to portray him.

I've been working and showing as an artist for almost forty years and I learned A LOT from this book!

Patti Brady's "Rethinking Acrylics" has proved to be even better than my (previously reviewed) favourite, Nancy Reyner's "Acrylic Revolution, and that's saying a lot. As an artist, I have changed from pastel work to painting abstracts in acrylics, and I could not have developed the unique textural and reflective effects I wanted without the help of Patti Brady's book.One comment claims that most artists use only acrylic pigments and water. Maybe hobby artists do, but to create finishes that professionally replicate the beautiful effects of traditional mediums like oils and encaustics, it is necessary to go further than pigment and water alone. For example, there are artists like myself who do not have the correct ventilation for using encaustics. Patty Brady demonstrates an exciting "faux encaustic" using acrylic pigments and mediums that solves the problem and looks very like the real thing.Another challenge is in creating vibrancy and light. It is not possible to use ten to twenty glazes to achieve light refraction and depth without using the unique effects of acrylic mediums. And if you want to "float" objects in successive transparent layers, the use of an acrylic medium is essential. Brady covers all these techniques and more.Regardless of whether you like Patti Brady's style of art or not, she has the use of acrylic mediums down to a fine art. If you want to learn to exploit acrylics to the full, this is definitely the book. And it does show work in progress from other artists who demonstrate creative uses of acrylic pigments and mediums in very different styles.While the book does focus exclusively on Golden Artists Colours, it is possible to adapt the techniques to other quality brands. The emphasis is on quality. It is impossible to achieve the same effects (as Brady does) by using cheap substitutes. I have also found Golden Paints much more user friendly than other brands in regard to toxicity. Despite initial price, they are economical because they have a high chroma and so go a long way. No, it does not cost $50 dollars to complete a painting with Golden Paints" as one commenter claims. My most recent work was 39 inches x 45 inches and the Golden Products I used would have cost me less than $15 (and some were specialty products.)There are no "cheap gimmicks" in this book as one critic has claimed. It is the ability to achieve the visual statement you want that determines choice of paint medium. "Rethinking Acrylics" has helped me achieve results well beyond what I had initially hoped.

Pros:-A lot of good information for someone who already knows how to paint. Covers all of the Golden products. Seeing as she works for Golden, this didn't come as much of a surprise to me when purchasing the book. The information is very useful if you enjoy their products.-The project ideas are 'outside the box' and employ a lot of different applications of acrylic. I am a big fan of texture in acrylics, and this book has plenty of it.-The information given is solid, no glaring errors. The in depth information on acrylic was the best I've read yet.-The photographs look great and it is well written overall.Cons:-Would probably confuse beginners as there's very little basic information. It's assumed if you're purchasing this, you've used acrylic a decent amount in the past. I wouldn't recommend this for a new enthusiast or first year painting student.-If you don't use Golden products, she does not list alternatives/equivalents.-The projects don't have enough step by step pictures. The descriptions can get a little confusing at times as well. A beginner could easily get lost.-The artist's profiles were hit and miss.Overall this is a book for an abstract artist. There's not a lot about significant form, or traditional styles of painting. One chapter DOES cover using Open Acrylics (again, she's plugging a Golden product) in traditional/oil style and could be very useful for those who wish to venture into acrylic, but other than that you won't find much on traditional styles or the "Old Masters" as she refers to them in the book. If you are looking for a more traditional style of painting, try The Acrylics Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist

This is a fantastic book describing all the various techniques available with acrylic paints, gels, mediums and gessos. I have looked at all the many types of texturizing mediums, varnishes, and additives and own most of them but unless you really know what they are used for an how to apply them you will be at a loss when it comes to getting the look you want from them once you try to use them.This describes most of the texture gels available and shows how to apply them. Photos of abstracts utilizing them are shown so you can get an idea of how they look when expertly applied. This book was exactly what I was looking for.My one problem with this book is that it is in binder form, with a metal binder to hold the pages underneath the outer book binding. Therefore, the pages tear out easily when you don't want them to.The photos are large and some nice artwork is shown for examples. The descriptions of how to get the mediums onto your work platform, whether canvas, board or paper, could be more detailed, and in most cases there is only one or two brief sentences about how to do this.Of course this means you need to experiment, and that is left to you.I found this book to be exactly what I had hoped it would be. Lots of new projects aredescribed to try out the various mediums and types of acrylic paint, and details are given sufficiently in the descriptions of these projects that it will inspire anyone to try out a few. Even the paint colors are given if you want to try to duplicate some of the lovelyabstracts shown. I was very pleased with this book.
