While I am always happy to grab a book full of naughty Newtons, it would have been even more wonderful to see the complete series of images that the undisputed master of kinky chic had created for the various euro fashion giants....some campaigns being a one season adventure, while others scandalized for years. The amount of advertising that he shot for french designer Yves Saint Laurent alone ,could easily fill a book. It was the perfect marriage of designer and imagist, followed very closely by Newton's ads for Thierry Mugler's erotically charged fashion fantasies. Sometimes it's hard to tell who came first, Newton or Mugler! In any case, Newton's unique imagry clearly remains unchallenged, even at their most commercial and subtle. The perfectly over groomed mannequins posed ever so precisely to convey roles of power, dominance , discipline, torture, fetishism and erotic menace...are all here. The acres of flawless,palest skin, highest heels, blood red lips, cold, smokey eyes often expressing a complete indifference to anyone looking on. The spectacularly graphic and bold compositions combined with the clever use of the blackest shadows as design devices instantly helps to define a Newton photograph. Many of the images showcasing his legendary wit and black humor, not to mention social and sexual comment.There's an amusing series shot for a calender with wickedly suggestive teenage lolitas posed at the ready in a desolate , dusty desertscape showing newton's playful and light hearted side.....very tongue and chic...and clearly inspired by one of his favorite themes, American Pop Culture. One missed opportunity for an amazing campaign would have been Helmut Newton for Tom Ford's Gucci....I can't imagine a more perfect union: A Newton "driving' a Ford to ecstasy....both men forever fascinated with drama, controversial lust and impossibly decadent glamour. If there was indeed some tests, it would be terrific fun if they ever surface. Paging mr. Ford....

However this was the daily use in the Greek, Roman and Egyptian religion (sorry to remember, that the Aztecs tore the heart of young virgins out of the live body). Newton has reversed this development - he told us, to idolize women again. I visited the Helmut Newton exhibition A GUN FOR HIRE in the "Museum for Photography" in Berlin, near the Station ZOO, Jebens-Street 2. Sometimes I thought Newton is cynical, contemptuous against women, emphasizes the power struggle between the sexes too much. After the reading of his autobiography I thought: "What a humorous, witty person! " After having the pleasure to watch the film of his wife on his work, I thought, oh God, I get dizzy by this hand-held shaking camera. After the reading of the museum catalogue A GUN FOR HIRE I always get quiet again. Newton was skilful. He regarded himself as A GUN FOR HIRE self ironically, as an unfortunately rentable killer because of the kind money. But if he had carried out a banal "killer" order with the necessary simple, most childish aesthetics guidelines for any fashion magazine, showing the models in a predefined wardrobe sales beneficially - then he afterwards extended the dialog with a lady in most cases after completion of this obedient work for the capitalist system of the chewing fan heating - then he enlarged the dialog into the direction of more human, erotic, adult and no longer infantile situations, real and no more prudishly, running free experimenting for new emotion and aura. The growing picture collection from the vermiform appendix after that official work peeled out that image, that unique art form, which everyone connects now with the name Helmut Newton - a milestone in the history of photography. Before the visit of the exhibition A GUN FOR HIRE (in the long night of the museums in Berlin, January 2006) I went astray in that nightmare of holocaust stele field in Berlin. Highly recommended for anyone who knows Helmut Newton only by reputation. This doesn't show his most graphic work, but it has a nice range of his early editorial photos, fashion campaigns, absolut ads. This book is a great example of showcasing Newton's talent as a photographer. Instead of focusing on his sometimes intense sexual images, this book focuses on the composition, layout and colors his photography had. Don't worry, you Newton-lovers, the sexuality is still here for all to enjoy.Newton is one of those photographers whose intense images and reputation can overshadow the actual brilliance of what's important...the photographs. If you are mostly familiar with his black and white photography, the colors in this book will take your breath away.Don't be shy, this book will make you appreciate what a true talent Newton was without shocking you.

While i like HN work and always pick out his style even if i dont know a particular photograph, this book was downright disappointing. Its like someone assembled pictures which weren't good enough to be included in any of the other (previous) books just to sell it to suckers who will buy anything by HN. However, i absolutely adored the 4 or 5 pics of Monica Belucci and bought the book solely on account of them.

Bought this for my 4th year EM clerkship. It presents pathology in a diagnosis-first manner (similar to FA for Step 1), where is has a section for each disease process that highlights pertinent history, physical, lab findings, and then states treatment. While the information is great, it isn't too helpful from a real-world (or test question) standpoint, which works from a chief complaint -> ddx -> diagnosis -> treatment. I ended up not using this book after the first week of my clerkship.

As someone who's going into EM I decided to be an overachiever getting an EM primary textbook (Tintinalli's) before I started my 4th year rotation.That didn't go very far before I realized it was long, hard and I'd not finish it in a year- leave alone a month.I then bought this which was a solid review for the rotation covering most common pimp topics, most common test questions and most common ED scenarios. While I'm sure there were deficiencies of some kind there was nothing major that jumped out at me.

I am a fourth year medical student and I just finished this yesterday for my EM clerkship. I think this covers all of the most important topics. The mnemonics and other tips in the margin of the book are helpful. I wish there were more colored photos. Otherwise, I am very satisfied and feel that it was a key resource for my preparation for my clerkship exam.

Book is just okay. If you already have a Step Up to Medicine book or something similar I would stick to just looking up ER topics in that. Don't spend money specifically on this. (Coming up from a Physician Assistant EOR exam perspective).

This book is frustrating. I bought it for my kindle reader and I believe there might be an error in coding of the e reader. My largest gripe is that every time the book tries to use an up or down arrow to indicate "increases" or "decreases", the arrow is backwards. It uses these all over the book and its difficult for me to remember to flip it mentally every time. Additionally there are a ton of spelling and grammatical errors throughout the book. I attached an example. I really hope they fix this.

Book is severely outdated; however basic principles aren't terrible for building a foundation for EM clerkships. Must supplement with various other resources to keep yourself updated or else you may be answering questions wrong in your clerkship. There is probably a better book out there other than this book and that isn't just cases or questions like case files or pretest respectively.

Saved my ass several times during pimp questions in the ER rotation. A good read, esp during downtime or when your preceptor gives you a topic for presentation but doesn't want a long-ass report.

This is honestly a TERRIBLE book.It doent even outline the basics.There are skin cancers in here, which I have not seen in the ER, but basic things like influenza and septic shock aren't in here.It's easy to real with little wording on each page which is great and all, but it doent even cover half of what I need to know (as a PA student) If I could still return it I would!

Ding-Geng (Din) Chen is the Karl E. Peace Endowed Eminent Scholar Chair in Biostatistics and professor of biostatistics in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University. Dr. Chen’s research interests include microarray, genetics, clinical trials, environmental, and toxicological applications as well as biostatistical methodological development in Bayesian models, survival analysis, and statistics in biological assays. Karl E. Peace is the Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar, founding director of the Center for Biostatistics, and professor of biostatistics in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University. Dr. Peace has made pivotal contributions in the development and approval of drugs to treat numerous diseases and disorders. A fellow of the ASA, he has been a recipient of many honors, including the Drug Information Association Outstanding Service Award, the American Public Health Association Statistics Section Award, and recognition by the Georgia and US Houses of Representatives. "Here is a toy your cat might like",2 "If s/he has a hard time jumping up, then you may have to build or improvise a ramp", and here's the kicker--3 "Nothing should be done without your vet's supervision".There, that's it. With statements like "this might be a good idea" and "I might try that" interspersed throughout, with no actual useful information given about Why this "might" be so.An example of what I'm talking about.. This person, who presumes to be writing a "complete" Bible of Cat, states verbatim:Quote: "I don't think there's any evidence that raw meats are better than cooked meats." Endquote.I guess she has never heard of "Pottenger's cats".Also, in reading this book, she basically advises irritating your senior cat until they have no peace. As in "If they're sleeping wake them up to exercise", etc. What Baloney!Don't waste your money.

I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. Can't really say exactly why I was disappointed, but maybe it was because I already knew most of what was useful for me in this book. I was hoping maybe that it would say a little more about how to make everyday living a little more comfortable for a senior cat, how to entice them to eat & drink, and how to accommodate them more.

I have an aging cat with arthritis. It gave me some ideas that were not medication. I wish there was more specific details of how to do acupressure on a cat. Chartswith important pressure points. Another cat has food allergies. I would like more specific foods for a cat and what to ask the veterinarian about how much food in calories a cat should have.

I gave up on Danielle Steel a few years ago.. all novels had the same pitch, and it became not enjoyable to read her, after, reading many many of her books.. This was recommended by a friend, who could not put it down.. That's what I like to hear about a book.. I was totally into it as well, and will try Ms Steel another time.

With everything going on during the turn of the 20th century, you could really feel this young girl's pain and joy. It was at a time in our history where women were second class citizens, and events that were totally out of their control happened. I could not put this book down. Annabelle had so many chapters in your life, up and down. The other historical' type of book Danielle Steel wrote was The Ring. Both of these books, in my opinion were her absolute best!

What a story. This book is so full of dramatic events. Both heroic and sad, but how this woman had the courage to help wounded soldiers in a new country. She also pursued her desire to become a doctor and lived in very dire conditions. Not a very beautiful existence for this woman but she held her head up high and made a good life for herself.

I loved this book so much I did not want it to end; it was VERY interesting from beginning to end with many twists and turns that were woven into the plot. One of this author's must reads, I think!

If you like roller coaster rides, you'll love this. Never a dull moment. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad, disappointed but soon to follow that "can't wait to see what is next" feeling! I loved it, hated it then appreciated the whole novel. Good read!

I am a literature major, but wanted something easy to read to relax on a plane. This is a simple book with sweet characters that are very uncomplicated. You could tell what was coming well ahead of time. It would have been nice to see more depth in Annabelle. She went through her life in a very disconnected way. Her soul searching was very superficial considering all the angst she suffered through.

I liked this book very much. It kept my interest and could'nt wait to start reading it again when I put it down. I would recommend this book to my granddaughter. I really like Danielle Steele, she writes very interesting clean books anyone could read.

Not the usual storyline for this lady. It moved along & was never boring. It also kept surprising me with the twists. I enjoyed the book but it irritated me that so many tragedies took place.

This is a thorough and fascinating overview of laws and spatial orientations ("Räumsinne" in German) that have both changed and remained consistent throughout millennia.Carl Schmitt, jurist and political theologian, examines everything from Greek antiquity to Spanish conquest of the Americas up until the League of Nations to question whether or not there is some fundamental moral or natural order under-girding the laws that men have used to govern one-another and themselves through the ages. Although Schmitt is undoubtedly conservative, his examination of colonialism and imperialism, contrasted with his even-handed treatment of Marxism, makes this essential reading for anyone who wants to read a meditation on the theoretical uses of power, and the application and abuses of power and force in the realm of human affairs (especially in war). As with all of Schmitt's works, there is also much examination of geopolitics and the implication of where and how borders are drawn, and by whom and under what system of reasoning.The reading isn't light, but Schmitt is a clear thinker and expresses himself in a way that the advanced layman should have no trouble understanding. His meditations on space/ Räume are not only relevant today, but are even more important concepts to understand now, as the terrain in which humans vie for control of one-another have expanded beyond land, sea, and even space as Schmitt understood it.He died just as the next philosophical turn ("Wendung" in German) was changing from the macro- and micro- to the nano-, and of course with the rise of drone warfare and the surveillance state, his grappling with the big questions is an endeavor from which no one should be excluded."The Nomos of the Earth" is an open invitation to begin thinking in deeper terms about power, borders, contracts, and whether Hobbes or Roseau will have the final say in how man will either advance or destroy himself with civilization, its laws, and its technology. Schmitt also leaves open the possibility that some sort of compromise between various orientations and understandings might be reached, precluding the need for conflict or a struggle which (considering the means we now have at our disposal) could be all-consuming/annihilating. The work strikes just the right balance between a pragmatic rumination and a (for Schmitt) humanistic tendency to believe that a resolution of our many antagonisms might not be beyond reach. Recommended.

Despite its trilingual title, this book is not quite as difficult as it may appear. It is a brief history of international law from a distinctive viewpoint. The ancient Greek word "nomos" is considered by the author to refer to the allocation of land, an act he regards as basic to the establishment of law since land is directly associated with power. "Jus publicum Europaeum" means "European public [i.e., international] law." The author associates international legal systems with regions of the earth, each possibly with a system of its own. Such a region is known as a "Grossraum". The narrative goes like this:International law began with a federation or empire of associated cities or other settled entities set in the midst of unsettled territory outside. A "civilized world" grew from settlements and land allocations. Ancient empires could eventually establish contact and by means of a treaty engage in peaceful commerce with each other.When the Roman Empire fell, the conquerors took over its legal culture (not to mention a good deal more). Christian thinking reached a high level of subtlety while Europe was surrounded by non-Christian enemies. The earliest form of European international law came into being to regulate war between Christian princes, which was a civilized process compared to wars against outsiders, who were considered children of the Devil. This was the period of the "just war" (a concept of Augustine) and the "just enemy". In the author's terminology, the lands inside Europe had a "soil status" different from that of the lands outside. There was a distinct "grossraum" for each.The Reformation destroyed the fabric of belief underlying "just war" formulations. After Bodin and Hobbes, there were only sovereign states. From the 16th to 18th centuries, the "just war" concept was revived in a different form. Grotius and Kant saw the unjust enemy was one whose conduct indicated an attempt to upset a balance of power between states. The author suggests that this criterion might be inadequate. If the balance of power (in effect, territory) was perceived as wrong, then some (revolutionaries for example) might deem it deserving of upset. That is, political or ethical issues might be involved that a purely juristic point of view could not resolve. There was also a special role for "neutral" states, which could mediate between combatants. Guarantees of neutrality were assigned to states by pan-European conferences like the Congress of Vienna. The author's discussion of balance of power, neutrality, and state succession in Part III, Chapter 4 is the core of the book.During this period, Europeans were exploring the oceans and continents of the New World, which they saw as simply expanses that were for all practical purposes uninhabited and appropriate for free commerce and even piracy (on the sea. legally sanctioned). "Amity lines" on maps delimited zones of exploitation by specific nations. The English excelled in developing the new areas, mainly for economic purposes. Their preoccupation was free trade; it was appropriate that England with her navy should be the greatest power in the New World. In this way another "Grossraum" came into being. Now there were two major areas, each with its own characteristic "nomos".The character of New World soil changed after the American revolution. In the minds of Jefferson and others, the Americas were pure and not to be defiled by European intervention. The US began to show considerable influence in the New World "Grossraum" by promulgating the Monroe Doctrine. On the other hand, European international law was unable to take into account developments outside its area and consequently went into decline. For example, in the 1885 Congo Conference. King Leopold II of Belgium, a state designated as neutral, was able to make the Congo a private colony with the same land status as his kingdom. This was absurd from the European viewpoint. The Versailles Treaty and the Geneva Protocol provided additional evidence of decline. By resorting to sections of the German civil code, the European allies attempted to punish Kaiser Wilhelm personally for the War even though Bethmann-Hollweg declared the full responsibility to be his. This viewpoint allowed no place for the concept of specific acts as war crimes. The Americans were somewhat more thoughtful; they avoided the problems of Versailles by signing a separate peace with Germany, but likewise gave in to popular sentiment with the Kellogg-Briand Pact and the Stimson Doctrine, which likewise blurred the legal contrast of war as a whole with specific acts of war. The Americans also promulgated new ideas about aggression and diplomatic recognition about which the author has doubts. Interestingly he appears to find the concept of just war legitimate.There is no space here to discuss the further ramifications of the author's ideas. Surprisingly he was the principal political and legal theorist of Nazi Germany; the book was written in Berlin during World War II. But this is a work that experts take very seriously and I am sure it is not merely an apology for Nazi policies. The introduction by G. L. Ulmen provides important background.
