This is one of those books that you will remember for a long, long time. Thordis is an extraordinary woman on an incredibly brave journey to find forgiveness and reconciliation with someone who did something most people would find unforgivable.Her writing style flows nicely, although as an artist she does seem prone to get a little flowery at points. (Some reviewers seem to interpret this as her being overly dramatic, but I think it is just an artist’s way of dealing with experiences that defy words). She is painfully honest, at times admitting to thoughts and feelings that wouldn’t fit with people’s expectations of how she should feel. But her willingness to admit to these feelings and her sense of conflict over them makes her more authentic and human.There are also some sections by Tom, the man who raped her. It is interesting to see into his experiences with guilt, with trying to help Thordis heal, and with his shifting attitude towards himself.If this book were a work of fiction I would call it unrealistic. But since this is two people telling a true story, I will call it (and them) amazing.
I have now read this book twice. It is by far one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Thordis and Tom take us on a journey unlike any other. It is beautiful, heart-wrenching, brave and groundbreaking. Having spent a lot of time reading, researching and working in the field of sexual assault I found this book compelling and eye opening. South of Forgiveness seeks to break down the shame and silence that perpetuates rape. I'm filled with awe and gratitude for the work it took them to get to the place where they could write this book.
This was truly a engaging and thought-provoking read. I started reading it and was so engaged that I finished it the same evening, in about three hours. As a therapist in training who is planning to work with survivors of trauma, I'm so glad that I stumbled upon the TED talk by Thordis and Tom that led me to this book. This was definitely not an easy read, but was absolutely a worthwhile read.
Bought this book after hearing the ted talk, was expecting more from it. The story is long winded, not as captivating as the shorter ted talk. Still happy I own it and I may revisit it in the future but as of now, struggled to get through the first third of the book.
The book is great! The disc however didn’t even work. Defective. I had to get it on Audible to listen to it. So the book itself is worth it. The audio disk is not. I went on vacation right after purchasing it and didn’t get back and listen to until after my return window has closed. The company was not nice about it. I’m stuck with a defective disk.
This book seemed as though was written to be a movie. I found authors writing to be tedious, lacking creativity. One saving factor is that she does reveal the lasting trauma for victims of date rape, rape in general. I did not finish book, could not stay with it could not do so.
This book is life changing. It challenges those who work with survivors to see things from a different perspective to better serve our survivors.
Deep conversations. Surprisingly subtle humor. Humans sometimes find awkward humor when things are serious. This is beautifully done in this book.
