I borrowed this book from a friend, but had to replace her copy because I had taken such copious notes in the one she loaned me. I come from a Lutheran background, with about 25 years of non-denominational, fundamentalist church-going on top of that. I have never known anything other than the sin/redemption idea of spirituality! Matthew Fox's writing opened my mind to the idea that God is absolutely crazy about me and nothing I can do will lessen his love for me. I feel I'm finally free to explore the God that I was always hoping to find; the God that isn't disappointed in my daily lack of spiritual perfection. I can understand why this book makes some people so mad-- it questions why religions are so strongly bent on keeping people in a system that upholds the male-dominated, "pleasure equals sin" dogma.I also recommend Rob Bell's book, "Love Wins" as an additional resource that will enhance your spiritual seeking.

This is an important work. It helps overcome the damage done by preachers of retribution theology. God doesn't make junk. It ties into the Benedictine, Franciscan and Jesuit spiritualities that God is present in each and every person and in all of Creation. It is great for all who want to serve the "unchurched" and Spiritual Bout Not Religious (SBNR) Like Fr Berry said, "Put the Bible back on the shelf, God reveals Himself in nature."

Themes 21-26.There are three appendixes in the book, the first deals with Question One and the second with Question Two. The third appendix gives a list of books especially recommended to read for this type of spirituality and this book uses that list quite often when referencing.Each chapter (what this book calls "Themes") starts off with plenty of quotations from different sources, all relevant to the subject of that particular theme. This book has several references and can come off as a bit scholarly, but if one takes his or her time, there is a lot of information strung throughout the book, the reader will surely be quite satisfied with the effort. It isn't difficult reading, but it can come off that way sometimes.I got this book in excellent condition. It is a paperback with a dark green cover. The book is relatively heavy and fold back on itself, so during reading, I had to hold on to the book. I couldn't just sit the book down on a table and read. I got this book through Amazon Prime which is normally 2 business days, but because there was a weekend and a holiday, it was a couple of days shy of a week when I finally got the book (an oversight on my part).I was recommended this book by a friend who was into Celtic Spirituality. He told me that this book helped him get started on his path. I am glad that I did get this book, because it has helped me put into perspective of how I can practically put what I learn from the Irish and Scottish monks into everyday use in this day and age. I proudly give it 5 stars and highly recommend it to everyone!

I believe this is one of the most important books ever written about religion and the importance of seeing that God's creation is good, including people. A positive worldview contributes to healing the divisions that have arisen because of too much negative theology. I am grateful to Matthew Fox for sharing his most enlightening spiritual vision with us.

How has it taken me this long to read this book? I've known about the author for more than two decades, but am just now reading his work and cannot get enough of his perspective; he's marvelous in how he expands upon and beyond the dogma in which I was raised (and left behind more than thirty years ago). Beautiful person and views of the sacred.

Great. Wish I had read this years ago. It gives me a real understanding that we were not stained with an "original sin" but given an "orginal blessing"

Matthew Fox writes that the Western emphasis on original sin/redemption has been and is still responsible for many of the ills in our society. Originally, Christianity was more of a nurturing, feminine religion, as were many of the tribal beliefs in times past. Original Blessing makes God into a more accessible, loving deity. Instead of being cursed at birth, we are blessed and given the chance to be innovative and loving. Mr. Fox's book helped me to see my relationship with God in a much more positive light.

I bought this book for a single chapter: "Debar the Creative ENERGY OF LIFE"This chapter can help you understand: "The Word was in the beginning, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."And the Word became flesh and lived amoung us...The original "word" used for "The Word" was Debar, which means Creative and dynamic energy. This chapter alone can help Christians understand that Lord Jesus Christ is really the foundational energy of the universe, that is dynamic and creative. This understanding points to the primordial Light of Lord Jesus Christ,(all things were made through him) and goes hand in hand with Fox's understanding of The Cosmic Christ. Also the Word as Creative energy is in accord with the theology of St John, as he sets the readers of the gospel of John up to focus on Jesus as an object of devotion. And as I have found devotion is the doorway into the creative energy of life, the Jesus that is the same yesterday today, and tomarrow. I hope the book helps us you find the way of Jesus to be the eternal light of the universe.

This volume gives us an interesting ethnography of an impoverished slum in Cotabato City called Campo Muslim. The author protracts his study of the slum to encompass anthropological contributions to understanding Gramscian hegemony, nationalism, colonial histories, formation of new, post-traditional elites, and subaltern resistance. Most useful in this book is the account of the construction of Muslim national identity and the account of the elections in the late 80s wherein the Muslim and Islamist participants made an unexpectedly poor showing giving most of the victories to Christian candidates. Parts of the book are uneven; however, the account is consistent to his methodology from the outside and he allows the information to lead him--always be circumspect that ideology or presuppositions don't lead his interpretations by the nose at least in matters of peasant politics. In other words, the peasant remains an autonomous political actor that doesn't merely parrot and conform to the requests of the socially more advantaged.The most glaring flaw in the book was what I personally found to be an over-identification with Muslim Filippinos over and against Christian Filippinos. Armed separatist movements are portrayed sympathetically, whereas 'Christian' efforts, whether in terms of national integration, militant attemtps to stop succession, and even charity are treated as all being pernicious acts directed against Muslims. One example was the characterization of Mother Theresa's charity for children in the city as being 'perverse' without any such acerbic criticisms for the vicious effects of separatism movement and the deaths it caused given. The same goes for foreign actors. In the work, American actions in the Philippines are sinister and undermine Philippine Muslim identity; whereas, Libyan, Saudi Arabian, and Egyptian interference are merely catalysts for social change.

I read this book as part of a research project that I'm doing. Mr. McKenna did an outstanding job of presenting historical facts, bibliographic material and his own opinions. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to further understand the Southern Philippines and the growing strength of the Muslim movement.

Very well written, this story follows the life and times in Arabia of the founder of modern day Saudi Arabia and his sons from the early years of the 20th Century through the 1970's. The author pays close attention to the mind set of these Arab leaders that is essential to understanding the attitudes and motives of later Saudi rules right up to current times. If you want to understand what drives the Saudi society and government today, you need to read this book to gain an understanding of the foundiing family.

Matches up well to what I learned about Saudi Arabia by working there in the 1990's, plus background info I was unaware of at the time. Exceptionally interesting.

This is an excellent history of Saudi Arabia. While you may not really care about their history -- you should, because it goes a long way towards explaning why we are in the mess we are today with our overwhelming dependence on oil and foreign oil. Yes, I'm a left-wing tree-hugging oil-spill-hating liberal, but I have no love lost for either political party and am sick to death of being patronized by them on this issue. "The Kingdom" educated me so that I can make intelligent arguments to my elected officials, whether they listen or not. Highly recommend, worth spending the money on even a used copy, too bad it's out of print.

Just seems to be a book of classical sheet music arranged to be in melodica range, sorted by composer. I wish I could be in order of “Reccomened”, like having the easier songs first, but the book is fine the way it is. Also wish the book the spiral bound or something instead, it would be easier to keep open.

It's really helpful for a beginner, it comes with clear instructions in the opening of the booklet and teaches more of the sheet music language before letting the student move on to the actual music pieces.

This book of Classical music is going to be perfect for my beginner students. Thank you. It's beautiful, love the sketches in it.

I'm again enjoying this novel of our biblical ancestors "Abram & Sarai" (Abraham and Sarah). I said again, because it tells their beautiful story of life, love, loss & the trail to FAITH in God, yet including a womans point of view like in the book "The Red Tent". I'm excited to read the rest of this trilogy. So far so good.

This author is not too ‘Christ like’ in my opinion. I read three books hoping it was just me but I found my spirit not sitting well. Waaaaaayyyyy too sexual. I’m all about being blunt and telling a story how it is and not sugar coating situations, but this is overkill. Big time overkill on this series. I felt ‘dirty’ when I finished. I like to keep it inline with His Word...”whatsoever things are lovely, ect. Think on these things”.

If you are looking for something that follows the Biblical account exactly, then this is not going to please you. This is a fictional novel that generally aligns with the story of Abraham and Sarah. In the Genesis account there is minimal background revealed about Sarah. We are told she is Abram's wife, she is barren and she was beautiful. I felt Halter provided a creative work to weave those points into a thoughtful novel. The interaction of the characters to each other and circumstances was the interesting aspect of the book. That's because we know how things ended!

The Rerligious background of the day wasx pluralistic and earthy.I appreciated the noting of the pluralism of religious experience of the setting.The writing was stilted and seemed to follow a formula of creating a book for ultimate sales.Sarah's sexual explolits overshadowed the more important elements that were available for exploration. An example for misplaced emphasis is in the lack of attention to the birth and sacrifince of Isaac. I would have, perhaps, enjoyed the story lmore if I was not aware of the richness of the original story and how thar richness was not expllited in this rendition.

This past year I have been reading a several biographies on old testament characters. I like to read those that presents a woman's point of view. This was good in that I was able to learn what life may have been like at the time that Sarah (Sarai) lived. I felt that a little too much liberty was taken in the story line. It paralleled the Biblical story, but seemed to develop a background that for her that seemed a bit unlikely. Still, I did enjoy the read and felt like I did learn from it.

This novel was so well written and captivating that I finished it in two days. I picked it up every chance I got. I love any sort of historical fiction, as I'm always trying to learn about cultures from all over the world. Biblical history is especially interesting because it gives context to the stories and people from the Bible. I look forward to reading more of Halter's work.

I loved this book. I'm fascinated by women in the Bible, and this fictional account of Sarah's life is vivid and very interesting.

Good story!! Love this time period and learning about what life was like then!! I enjoy these!!

As a social worker counseling criminal clients for nearly 25 years, I was nodding my head as I read while this book, as it shed light on the complex and intersecting psychological and social factors that contribute to crime. It encourages all of us to think outside of the box, to get away from dichotomous good/bad thinking, and to understand the complicated ways that poverty, trauma, and discrimination shape human behavior and undermine the systems designed to address it. The book is also a deeply moving portrait of the resilience of the human spirit, and of the dedication of those who seek to give voice to the disempowered, oppressed, and marginalized who walk among us.I have personally met David, and his warmth and his passion are as intense as his good intentions.To those who might suggest that David Feige, or I, in our quest to understand behavior without judging it, are naively enabling criminals and unconcerned about victims, I say: you missed the point.

OK, so I like to watch all the legal shows, "Raising the Bar," "Shark," "Boston Legal," etc. David Feige was a public defender in New York and this book reflects those experiences. Something the book and all the shows have in common is that how you fare in court probably has less to do with guilt or innocence than with the internal politics and enmities of the "professionals" who run the show. I find that disheartening. Never having been in court (knock wood) I couldn't say but Feige has, and the picture painted is not pretty.It's all about client and time management. Public defenders often have a client load of between 75 and 120 cases. ADAs have a very different perspective because they are case centered rather than client centered so they can practice a zone offense. The public defender has to be with his/her client so he might be in seven or 10 courtrooms during the day, juggling phone calls meetings, and other duties while an ADA (who probably knows nothing of the case - often an advantage for the defense) tries to handle whatever case comes up in whatever courtroom he/she (enough of this he/she stuff - if I use he, assume s/he) might have been assigned to.The client every defense attorney has nightmares regarding is the innocent one. No one wants to defend an innocent client, yet those are the ones who mostly likely wind up going to trial. The guilty have everything to gain by accepting a plea -- pleas are the grease that keep the wheels of justice (hah!) from seizing up entirely. If an innocent person is found guilty, not an infrequent occurrence given that the deck is so heavily stacked against them, the defense attorney suffers through extraordinary self-examination, i.e., what could he have done better? What mistakes might he have made. "Defending the guilty is easy. . . The responsibility for the innocent can simply be too much. Sometimes it's better not even to wonder."It's interesting how the system is often used by lawyers and clients to simple find a place to exist. One homeless fellow would arrange to be charged with beating out on a restaurant tab in order to plead guilty to a minor theft charge and he always insisted on not accepting a plea and getting locked up for the winter months. Everyone knew what was going on. He had no money, no place to live and the entire system conspired to put him in jail for the winter. In another case, Cassandra, suffering from multiple mental issues, unable to afford drugs that helped to stabilize her condition, unable to qualify for any program, was helped back to jail by Feige so that she could obtain some of the medications she needed.Having a black face always means being treated differently. Big gangsters like Giotti et al strike the fancy of the media and public. The "ordinary" criminal rarely receives any kind of redemptive opportunity. "Fundamentalist Christians constantly speak passionately about seeing the possibility of redemption in everyone, and no one bats an eye. But make this same point in the secular context of the criminal justice system, and rather than praiseworthy piety it is heard as liberal gibberish."Learning to read judges is an important skill. Many of the judges are political hacks -- "overwhelmingly white, politically connected former prosecutors, they terrorized both defendants and the lawyers who appeared before them, meting out justice that was informed more by the code of the streets than by any legislation." They have extraordinary power and many use it to bully.The Constitution guarantees the right to a speedy trial. That's a joke. Those charged who have no money for bail often must spend as long as 12-15 months at Rikers Island in New York in a series of delays and motions before a trial can begin. So much for the presumption of innocence.Of course, if you are rich, it's a whole different ball game.An important hard-to-put-down book.:Courtroom 302: A Year Behind the Scenes in an American Criminal Courthouse.

I've seen this guy on TV as an expert commenter on criminal defense. He's always been lucid, with a somewhat wry sense of humor. He always made the subject clear. So I bought this book. I was a bit disappointed by the work of his editors. There were quite a few typos. They were usually missing spaces and/or formatting issues, which could be a side effect of converting some other format to Kindle. But there was massive use of the em dash (several times per page) that could/should have been commas or semi-colons.But all that aside, he presents a very personal and interesting look into the life of a public defender in New York (and probably most any large city.

This book truly encapsulates the public defender experience. It is not another lawyer book filled with meaningless platitudes or written by a professor in an ivory tower who either never knew what the trenches were like or has long since forgotten what they were like. It was really helpful to see another human being struggle with the same things that I struggle with being a public defender. Moreover, it helped me see things that I was missing in my own practice, and gave me insights to the ins and outs of being a public defender that I feel I had been missing. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

The truth of consequences from allowing unfettered discrimination in prosecutors and those who used to be prosecutors now wearing black robes does not speak well for the system. Power is not handled well by those with power. Justice is spoken well in this very fine book. I hope a few real advocates are drawn to doing the right thing against unfair odds

I would recommend anyone who seriously wants to understand the law from a citizens viewpoint to read Nolo books on how the legal system works, esp criminal justice. Innocent until proven guilty is a brutal myth.

I externed with a public defender office in California. The job is brutal, thankless and pretty much same as the author said except no night court in CA and as different cast but characters. A good read for anyone who has or many deal with the system.

I took a part-time telecommuting job as a technical editor, and my new employer uses the Microsoft Manual of Style is a standard reference. I decided to purchase a personal copy. I got it at a good price and quickly through Amazon Prime. Of course it is "the" style reference to have, it you are involved in writing or editing material that includes computer terminology.

This is a much improved over Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications Version 3. It's well layed out and it much more up-to-date (the previous version was 8 years old.)My pet peeve is that the old book version came with a CD with an electronic version. I went with the Kindle version, but don't want to pay additional for the physical copy. There should be some kind of discount if you buy both together--or better yet, the electronic version should be free with the physical copy.And, yes, there is reason for the physical copy. As a technical writer, I like to have a copy on my desk for others to look at when they have a question.

This book exceeded my expectations. Loved it so much, bought copies for my entire team. We will use this daily.

It is very easy to find the information you need.On top of the usual index at the end of the book, there's also a large section (part 2) entitled "Usage Dictionary" which lists computer and technical writing terms. It also lists terms that are considered to be obsolete and refers you to the updated terms.At the end of TOC there is also an index to the Usage Dictionary part.I've only recently got this book but have been using it extensively.Strongly recommended for professional technical writers.

This is a clear and concise guide useful for developers (even for non-Microsoft products). A searchable electronic version that preserved the graphics would be better, but it apparently does not exist. Use with the IEEE Computer Style Guide.

I use this guide frequently, and generally like the organization and the style of the reference itself. However, I'm beginning to get frustrated that there is no style guidance available for Windows 8, and since this version came out in late 2012, it should have included that guidance. There's a whole new set of objects, interaction styles, and UI controls in Windows 8, and it would be more than helpful to have Microsoft's views on how to refer to them.

Many of the links to online examples no longer work. What a disappointment in a resource that is supposed to be a model for technical communicators.

I had the 2005 version on my laptop. I sometimes used it every day. But technology has changed a lot since then. The 4th edition is now my go-to for anything technical...surpasses AP Style...or AP doesn't even touch on it. There are kindle and cloud versions too, for those of you who support the environment. I have both, and they both come in handy.
