About the Author

Lee Judah Ames (January 8, 1921 – June 3, 2011 ) was an American artist noted for his Draw 50... learn-to-draw books. He was born in Manhattan, New York. His first job at age eighteen was at Walt Disney Studios. He has since led a career as an advertising artist, fine artist, cartoonist, designer, animation in-betweener, illustrator, and as an artist-in residence at Doubleday. His series of 26 Draw 50... books take a friendly and minimalist approach to teaching drawing while the books often contain no instructional text. I got this to help me learn to draw dogs and to practice for an art class I'm having to take. It is a good basic primer, but I don't think it's all that great or instructive. Actually, there are NO instructions and some of the finished drawings I would consider intermediate and not beginner. It's all by sight and following the red lines that the artist/author has drawn. The first two steps of most of the drawings are easy to follow. As things get more detailed, it's a little harder to follow on some of the illustrations. And on some of them, by the end, it's impossible to tell where your initial red/drawing lines are supposed to be. It's decent, but not great, in my opinion.

I have a couple of these "Draw 50" books and they are always useful. This one is useful too, although I would have liked to see the drawings of dogs in different positions (laying down, from behind, etc.), but considering that there are fifty different dogs in this book, it would be difficult to see that in this format.

This simplifies drawing different breeds of dogs. I like this book better than the drawing fifty kinds of people because with the people I could have used a simple set of instructions to be able to draw humans--any human bodies in different positions not just bodies in costumes that maybe couldn't be generalized for other situations and periods. The dog breed pictures give a good look at the pertinent characteristics of each breed described.

My girls, 8 and 10, love these books! They are always bringing them home from the school library so we started buying them ---they are also great to take on trips! Love all the different choices like how to draw cats, undersea creatures and mythical creatures!

This is an excellent book series to teach children how to draw in a step by step manner. My daughter was so thrilled when the dog she drew actually looked like the breed she was trying to draw...excellent in print, not sure how well it adapts to kindle.

Great for students grade level 3rd and above.

I have found no other dog drawing book that had so, many dog breeds in one book. You can follow clearly the drawing explanation for the breads that are the most popular.

Truly great writing. I'm an undergraduate student and have recently came to love mathematics. The author's humor and clear passion for his book really shines through. I am using this book to teach myself analysis, basic proof writing and as a bridge to higher mathematics. Many undergrads experience difficulty in bridging to higher maths and analysis. I urge you to use the "look inside" feature of this book. I was sold doing just that, and am happy to report that the entire book is just as accessible, even to someone new to the field, such as me.

Geoff Smith's Introductory Mathematics: Algebra and Analysis provides a splendid introduction to the concepts of higher mathematics that students of pure mathematics need to know in upper division mathematics courses. Smith's explanations are clear and laced with humor. He gives the reader a sense of how mathematicians think about the subject, while making the reader aware of pitfalls such as notation that varies from book to book or country to country and subtleties that are hidden within the wording of definitions and theorems. Since the book is written for first-year British university students who are reading pure mathematics, Smith's approach is informal. He focuses on conveying the key concepts, while gradually building greater rigor into the exposition. The exercises range from straightforward to decidedly non-routine problems. Answers to all questions are provided in an appendix or on a website devoted to the book whose address is listed in the book's preface. That website also contains a list of known errata, extra, generally more difficult, exercises on the material in the book, and discussions of topics related to those in the book. The book is suitable for self-study. Students preparing to take or review advanced mathematics courses will be well-served by working through the text.The text begins with material on set theory, logic, functions, relations, equivalence relations, and intervals that is assumed or briefly discussed in all advanced pure mathematics courses. Smith then devotes a chapter to demonstrating various methods of proof, including mathematical induction, infinite descent, and proofs by contradiction. He discusses counterexamples, implication, and logical equivalence. However, the chapter is not a tutorial on how to write proofs. For that, he suggests that you work through D. L. Johnson's text Elements of Logic via Numbers and Sets (Springer Undergraduate Mathematics Series).Once this foundation is established, Smith discusses complex numbers. After describing the types of problems that can be solved using natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, and real numbers, he justifies the introduction of complex numbers by showing that they are necessary to solve quadratic equations. After deriving the Quadratic Formula, Smith describes the algebra of complex numbers, their rectangular and polar forms, and their relationship to trigonometric, exponential, and hyperbolic functions. Throughout the remainder of the book, he draws on the complex numbers as a source of examples.The next portion of the book is devoted to algebra. Smith discusses key concepts from linear algebra, including vectors, the Cauchy-Schwarz and Triangle inequalities, matrices, determinants, inverses, vector spaces, linear independence, span, and basis, that are widely used in mathematics. In addition to looking at their algebraic properties, Smith examines their geometric interpretation. He continues this practice with permutation groups, which he uses to introduce group theory, the branch of mathematics in which he does his research. Group theory is a deep topic, on which Smith and his wife, Olga Tabachnikova, have written a text for advanced undergraduates, Topics in Group Theory (Springer Undergraduate Mathematics Series). In this text, he confines the discussion to subgroups, cosets, Lagrange's Theorem, cyclic groups, homomorphisms, and isomorphisms.Smith introduces analysis with a chapter on sequences and series. After providing another proof of the Triangle Inequality, Smith focuses on limits, thereby giving the reader a first exposure to quantifiers. He also discusses some properties of the real numbers, introducing the concept of boundedness, the Completeness Axiom, and Cauchy sequences. The aforementioned exposure to quantifiers makes the subsequent definitions and proofs of theorems about continuity and limits of functions easier to grasp. He concludes the book with a discussion of how the real numbers can be constructed using Dedekind cuts and Cauchy sequences.There is a book by Ian Stewart and David Tall, The Foundations of Mathematics, that covers similar ground. It is devoted to building up the properties of number systems, which is a useful foundation for courses in analysis. However, it will not prepare you as well for courses in algebra as Smith's text, which I recommend enthusiastically.

...so take my review with a grain of salt.What this book seems to be telling me is I have no business trying to teach myself math. I suspect those with a natural aptitude will have no trouble with it, but I need more hand-holding than this text offers. Though I'm not a total numb-nut - I've gone to Wikipedia while studying some sections and have found clearer, more enlightening explanations.

Mathematics has changed so much and is now so widely applied - and this is a great introduction to modern algebra and frankly, modern math. I have been reading this book at a leisurely pace - no hurry here, just a nice diversion for me personally - and couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase. Just the right combination of simplicity and rigor, and logical progression of ideas through the book. As a novice, I have needed to go on the web and clarify some things that the author glosses over but only in a couple of instances.I have no idea how this book is for undergraduates or anyone that is pursuing math as a field of study - there are other reviewers that can attest to that better than I can. But for anyone curious about modern mathematics, this is likely an invaluable stepping stone.

If you want to understand mathematics after high school you must read this book first before plunging into university level mathematics. It will make your journey in mathematics much easier.

“Chick lit is genre fiction which addresses issues of modern womanhood, often humorously and lightheartedly.” Spinster is chick lit; whether chicks will like it I leave to the chicks. I think a broadminded, pun intended, man could well enjoy it.I’m not a chick, I was never going to be a spinster, I escaped the male version (bachelor) 26 years ago, and I’m not a fan of romantic comedy. So, inquiring minds want to know: Why did I pick up Thirty Two Going on … Spinster, keep reading and actually enjoyed it enough to want to read the next in the series?Word play. I downloaded the book because of that title, employing a cliché slightly differently from normal usage. I am a sucker for fun with words, advertising slogans, oxymorons (who doesn’t love a moron?), jibes and similar treats. The title promised, the book delivered.Spinsters. I know very few actual spinsters, as opposed to once married, and now single, women. I've never talked with a woman about facing spinsterhood. Of course, it wasn’t a surprise that it has been traditionally much more of a real concern for women than facing bachelorhood is for men. [Please – I’m not responsible for the gender stereotype.] Amid the fun of the book, I learned, if the book is at all accurate, some of the angst, some of the fears, that the word ‘spinster’ brings. I value learning. Learning while reading light fiction always makes a story more real and relevant for me.Finally, I like a good HEA or HFN. While I won’t tell you what it is, it doesn’t directly match the typical trope ending of a romance. The ending does match my view of a life on its way to being well led, a nice pleasant surprise.

This author is so funny. I love Julia Dorning. She’s such a delightful, hilarious heroine. I received the last book in this series for free and read it, not realizing there were 2 before it. I absolutely adored it, so had to go buy the first two books to get Julia’s whole story. And this did not disappoint. I guffawed several times because the text was so funny. But not over the top where you start rolling your eyes because you feel like you’ve fallen into a silly story that’s so far-fetched you start gagging after the first few chapters. No, this one is plausible; the character just has a hilarious mind that is always chirping in the background, making giggles erupt. Can’t wait to get into the 2nd book now. I highly recommend this series. It’s awesome.

It's been so long since I've read a sweet, ever growing and developed love story. This was THAT book for me. Even if you guess some of the directions this book is going to take you, there's still enough surprises to keep you hooked. I hate it that I have to buy at least 2 more books to continue with my growing friendship with Julia, Brown, Anna and we must not forget Jared. But, I'll gladly do it just to spend more time with characters who have become my friend. Read it. You'll be glad you did.

This is the second of the Spinster books that I've read (I actually got the last one as a freebie, read it first and enjoyed it enough to come back and get the other two--I wish I would've started at the beginning of the series, because it would have made everything that much more hilarious. Anyway, this was true to Julia's character and I loved the plot, which was well-thought out enough that it kept me wondering what would happen next WHILE laughing at Julia, Jared, her family and coworkers antics. I am looking forward to reading more from Becky Monson, starting with the Thirty-Three Going on Girlfriend novel!

I am new to Becky's writing, love her smile, gorgeous profile pic. Any who. love this cover and can not wait to read more from this series and from Becky, I found this when it was free on Amazon. Great quick read for me, I love a good mystery. My go 2 genre for sure. Never laugh so much in a bit, love that! I see I tend to get a lot of suggestions from Amazon that are trolled by dorks who tend to give these authors terrible reviews ... glad to say I did enjoy this read. I found it hilarious at times, love Becky's style. Such a great read. ( ;

I honestly feel like I'm being somewhat generous with this ranking. The story doesn't feel like it's going anywhere for a long time. You meet the main character as she realizes show much she lives as a spinster but she is barely willing to do anything to change her life. She might make a minor change and then give up for a while. It's not until the final quarter of the book that life actually happens to her and most of it is not of her own free will. I was glad she got her happy ending but will not be reading the next book in this series.

I almost put the book down after chapter one. I am so glad I didn't. The story line picked up quickly and even though dome of it was predictable there were some surprises I didn't see coming. Enjoyed the character development and the transformation of Julia! Wish I could sit I the breakdown and have a cupcake.

Little slow in starting but a great intro for a series! I felt as if i really got to know the teo lead characters--- well enough to invest in the outcome of the story. Yes it was pleasantly predictable but the few twists were written well and kept me intrigued! Am on to book #2 now!
