The first part of the book was so disturbing / depressing, I didn't think I could go on reading. I'm very glad I did.Whereas Ted Dekker has a propensity for words that are a bit sappy, there is no swearing. No sex. A bit of violence which was gross (read, "Icky") more than shocking.If there is doubt in your mind about God and His Son, our Saviour, and the Holy Spirit, I think you will be surprised by your feelings as you read. And, please, by all means read.

Ted Dekker is well known for his books on the spiritual forces in Heaven. Many of his books are really very entertaining and sometimes a little scary. However having said that, I struggled with this book as it seemed slow with maybe unnecessary detail. The story line with Kent Anthony as the main character was good and some people will relate to his predicament. One thing this book did emphasize is that money does not necessarily bring happiness. You cannot worship money and mammon. I personally didn't agree with his view of Heaven opening up (even briefly) to people here on planet earth. It took me over three weeks to get through this book which is unusual. To read the second trilogy in this series will not be my first port of call.

This is the 5th book I've read recently by Dekker, I read The Circle Series before this, and loved all of the books. So I'm new to Dekker, but I gotta say I am really drawn in to his way of telling a story, I am not a writer, so I don't know all the reasons for this, but I just love his books.Beyond that, the story here was really intense, I kept thinking that Kent can't go beyond what he'd already done, but Dekker kept taking the story further and further, the plan that Kent had made to steal all that money, and the payback to his bosses at the bank was incredible! It was very intense and all I wanted to do was read that book over breakfast, during lunch at work, and in the evening when I got home.I also enjoyed that crazy Helen, Kent's mother in law, I was really taken back by the prayer life she had, the sight she'd been given because of her prayer life, enjoyable reading, and also challenging, makes me wonder, even hope for more in my own life.The story also demonstrated how easily, and how completely one can be drawn into the things of this world, and ultimately how fruitless many of those pursuits can be, especially the pursuit of wealth as demonstrated in this story.I guess the bottom line for me is that this book really got me thinking about my own life, I am glad for this. I loved this book!

Ted Dekker has been one of my favorite authors for some time now and I thought that it was time to go back and visit some of his older works to further appreciate his newer ones. Heaven's Wager did not disappoint. I began to really feel for the novel's main character Kent Anthony and in the battle for his soul apart of me wanted God to win while another part of me wanted him to see his crimes through and embrace the darker side of himself. This inner battle allowed me to look deeper within myself which is what I believe the author was trying to get us to do. One of the main themes in the book was that we are all involved in a spiritual wager where God and Satan are both vying for our souls. Many of Ted Dekker's works are a little dark and you have to kind of prod around to see the Christian value in his books but not with Heaven's Wager. The spiritual battle took a front seat and I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to read the next installment of the Martyr series.

This is a definite 5-star read! Mr. Dekker has an awesome way of writing that creates striking visuals within the mind. His story line is clear and succinct and his characters can easily be grasped, empathized with, and related to."The neighborhood was a prison of sorts. Not one with bars and inmates, of course. But one to which you were sentenced with the drudgery of plowing through each day, burdened with the dogged knowledge that, even though you weren't running around stealing and killing, you were about as useful to society as those who did. Your worthless state of existence meant you would have to park your rear end here on Stupid Street and hook up to the government's mighty feeding tube. And everyone knew that those on the dole were a worthless lot."This is a sample of his fantastic writing. Trust me, you will love these books.

Heaven's Wager combines suspense, intrigue and spiritual warfare into a compelling novel.The protagonist, Kent Anthony, loses everything he holds near and dear, much like Job of the Old Testament. Unlike Job, Kent was not a believer at the time. The losses in his life pushed him further away from God. In spite of that, God keeps working on him in a variety of ways.The spiritual battle rages on while the other human events of the book play out.It all combines into a page turner story. I have read several of Dekker's novels. Every one of them has been very good. This is no exception.

I have read other works of Ted Dekker but nothing as spiritually powerful as this. It is hard to share how the story touched me and rekindled my deeper desire to experience God's love. So I won't. It will touch other readers where they need it the most.

This is my second time reading this book. Actually I read the trio of this story and read them all in less than a week. I had shared this book with a group of women as we all read them and discussed them. I wanted to own the book instead of borrowing it again and it's more powerful the second time around as I read.I know when a book is a great reader when I don't have to struggle through the first part to get into the book and this is a great book from the start. I read six chapters before I even realized how long I had been reading. A true 5 star book.

Harlan Coben recommended this book on the Today Show as a Christmas gift. I bought it for myself. The story of a black Texas Ranger sent to look into the murders of a black man and a white woman in two consecutive days was not exactly cheery but it was a very good book! Darren is in the process of trying to sort out some of his own personal and professional problems as he looks into the murders in Lark , Texas. He meets the widow of the black man and promises that he will find his killer. He suspects the husband of the white woman for a while but believes his story that while he laid some hurt on the man-he was still alive when he walked away from him. Page -turner!

Several interlacing plots involving crime, love and hate, and racial prejudice in Texas. Hero is a black Texas ranger who has drinking problems, and wants to keep the world safe for poor black people in forgotten rural areas, from which he also came. Villains include Aryan Brotherhood gangsters. Nice beginning, good plot with twisrs and turns, and life in a town of 200 people, including a gutsy 70 yr old black owner of a roadside cafe. Many secondary characters play good roles.

It took me a while to get into this story about a black Texas Ranger who’s suspended for going to the aid of an acquaintance who was being harassed by a white supremacist who was on his land. That supremacist is found dead two days later. Darren is already struggling with his marriage and drinking too much in his loneliness and frustration.Despite being suspended, when he hears about a black man found dead under suspicious circumstances in a town of 200 people that’s well known for having a high tolerance for members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, he can’t help but nose around, especially when a white girl is found dead in the same bayou just two days later. ABT is even worse than the KKK because it deals drugs like meth among its many criminal ties.This is when the story really picks up. I was taking notes and I still had a hard time figuring out who was related to whom and how, but I got the gist of it. Once I got into it, I devoured the book in a day.I enjoyed this mystery, which doesn’t shy away from the complexities of race and family.

Two bodies have turned up in quick succession in a small town in hardscrabble East Texas. The sheriff is inclined to treat them as unconnected. But not so Darren Matthews, a Texas Ranger who has come to town at the urging of a friend in the FBI who suspects larger forces at work there. An African-American, Darren fears a connection with the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas (ABT), a violent racist gang enriched by drug smuggling. However, Darren is on suspension from the Texas Rangers because he is suspected of involvement in the death of a known member of the ABT. Nonetheless, without authorization, he sets out to investigate the two deaths. Once in town, he encounters resistance from the sheriff and worrisome rumblings from the local people. No one, not the African-Americans who congregate at Geneva's cafe nor the white men who hang out in a nearby bar, is willing to help Darren at first. He's an outsider. He doesn't belong.This is the setup in Bluebird, Bluebird, the new novel from the widely acclaimed writer Attica Locke. Her title comes from a blues song of the same name sung by John Lee Hooker. ("Bluebird, bluebird, take this letter down South for me.") This is a well written novel and the only reason I give it 4 stars is that the hero - a black Texas Ranger - is an alcoholic who is stupid enough to buy liquor while in uniform and drinks on the job. This is a disconnect from the rest of the novel. It was often the case that the first blacks were overqualified for the job, having more education than their colleagues and their bosses. That is the case here. Locke skillfully relates the small towns of the south where residents are enmeshed with each other across race and where everything is civil as long as everyone knows their place. It is curious that the redneck bad guys belong to the Aryan brotherhood rather than the Klan. It is also farfetched that a black man would go into the local redneck bar for a drink. But thats only a small quibble. I look forward to the sequel.

This book just rings true. It is beautifully written and accurately illustrates a part of life that desperately needs examining. I would highly recommend if you are interested in history, psychology, or just plain humanity. It is also just rousingly satisfying! P.S. I'm a southeast Texas native.

I learnt programming with this one 30 years ago :-)

I feel embarrassed. After putting in a negative review for not receiving the shipment, it arrived the next day. It would have been nice to have received notice when the second shipment took place,but book arrived well packaged, and in excellent condition.I had a copy years ago, and wanted a new copy for when the kids I work with now come asking fortran questions. Book takes a somewhat different approach to teaching programming by providing real world analogies to explain programming concepts.

This is by far the most entertaining college textbook you will ever read. It is not really a coloring book (though you can color pictures in, if you really want), but rather a nice classical programming textbook. Some of it isn't incredibly useful, since you probably don't use punchcards anymore... but you probably don't use Fortran either, but it does teach the fundamentals of programming, which carries over from any language.In reality, this is probably a great gag-gift for the nerd who has everything. But it might also be good for a young person who doesn't believe that learning can be fun.On a personal note, this is the reason I chose to go MIT...once they accepted me, of course. But it probably also had something to do with my skillset being something that MIT was looking for: I read it as a young teenager, and it got me interested in programming while teaching me fundamentals at the same time. It also told me that any university that used this as their textbook had was of making learning entertaining & interesting, and ended up having a pretty big influence on my schooling and career.

This book was the best $6.95 I ever spent as a freshman engineer during the punch card days. The book is still useful reference for entry level programmers. The 'Dr. Seuss'-like presentation style doesn't go over the edge, while providing fodder for the doodling reader with a highlighter. Clearly many highlighter colors were required to assimilate Fortran carriage control. When it's all over, you have learned FORTRAN, guaranteed - or "you deserve your money back".

OK, just received it yesterday. Probably my error, but there is not a single photo of any recipe! I dislike that very much. There is not one thing inspiring about cooking something that does not have a photo. They could be great recipes, but not sure how many I will bother with. Sad. If you like food photos, don't waste your money.

I recently started having health problems involving my G.I. tract that the doctors can't quite figure out; all testing has come back clean, even for Celiac, but eating gluten free seems to help ease my excruciating pain so I decided to order this book to help me learn a whole new way of cooking/ living..I just got it not long ago, so I've only made/ tried a few recipes so far but they're really yummy. The instructions are ready to understand and it makes it easy to know what ingredients you'll need and the time it'll take.I highly recommend!

Gluten-free can be daunting and discouraging. So much of what we have been used to is now off limits and label reading is essential.. Not only food, but shampoos, lotions, makeup, and even medications may contain gluten. This book provides guidelines for those who are struggling with the diet. If you like to bake, gluten free is especially challenging and expensive. I have virtually given it up. This book isn't quite a primer on GF baking and I wouldn't make some of the recipes but, still, it's a good reference.

Gifted this to someone recently diagnosed with Celiac disease -- they really appreciated the ease of the recipes included while figuring out how to shift their lifestyle.

This book has a lot of good recipes I would have not known you good most of these. I can't wait to try some out.

Bought this for my mom for Christmas but she had already bought it for herself sooooo....anyway she has figured out a lot of neat recipes that even the non gluten allergied family enjoys. Soft cover no binding issues

I cannot read this series anymore. The author cannot seem to actually capture the era in which she CHOSE to write. She, makes constant, and increasingly overt, progressive condemnations of the culture at that time, when it does not help the storyline., even when it hurts the storyline. Why she would choose to write in a timeframe she can't understand is perplexing.I enjoy reading to learn more about the times before. While I don't expect those days to be presented in fluffy perfection, I do expect the writer to at least refrain from constantly interjecting personal political, contemporary points of view. I read historical "mysteries" to escape, not to be lectured.So, if you are not solidly in the Progressive Political camp, this may not be your cup of tea.

This is a terribly disappointing novel. I have read every one of the Maggie Hope mysteries but this may be my last. The plot doesn't justify the length, and it felt to me like a bad Agatha closed room mystery. The characters were never developed at least in my mind and I read far to many pages waiting for the inevitable unmasking to occur. Maggie is a great character, but his book is too slow to develop an unconvincing in resolution. I wish we were back in the old Winston, Eleanor, Princess Elizabeth days. I think its farewell for me.

I received an ARC from NetGalley of this mystery in exchange for an honest review; however, I also purchased the book. The Prisoner in the Castle is different from the others as it's written in the vein of Agatha Christie. Maggie Hope isn't on a regular mission -- she's in a castle with other spies who begin to disappear. If Maggie can't figure out whom she can trust and why fellow spies are being eliminated, she may be next. The Prisoner in the Castle is a non-stop rollercoaster ride of thrills and twists. I loved it and highly recommend it!

The author consistently makes errors of detail that, to me, detract from the overall story. Such things as Spitfires flying over Germany early in the war; why? Spitfires did not have the range to fly there and back while doing anything useful. They weren't bombers or capable of flying escort at that distance. In this book, the author states that the radio on the supply boat is used for voice communication, but later, when the enemy agent is communicating with the submarine, an interception of Morse code comms is made. Although some radios of the era were capable of both forms of communication, they generally were capable of one or the other as the frequency bands used were different.Also, although the drama is good for maintaining reader interest, there is too much angst and 'soul-searching' for my taste. Maggie Hope is left dangling at the end of the book; does she quit working for the government in disgust at the lack of trust in her or does she return to the fold as a good British subject?

I enjoy the Maggie Hope novels because of their well researched history. At first I thought of MacNeal's novels as light reading .However, her stories have become more and more compelling as she has continued Maggie Hope's adventures . This latest adventure is an homage to Agatha Christie's novel And then there were None which is referred to in the story, under its original title. The story is gripping and well written and hard to put down .It brings home the fear and uncertainty of Brittain fighting literally for it's survival. Excellent read.

I love this series. Probably going to need to reread the first 3 books to remind myself that I like it. This book was way too much like the Agatha Christie book, And Then There Were None. I saw the movie version of it and it was amazing. At first I didn't mind the clearly inspired plot. But Macneal didn't even change the murderer! The murderers in both stories are the paralleling characters! Such a disappointment. Also upsetting halfway in the book when you realize the prologue was pointless. Also, a lot of repetition in dialogue. Basically all the characters in the book are filler. The reason Agatha Christie's characters worked so well was because they all had back stories that tied into the reason they were killed off! Maybe the next one will be better since Maggie will be back in London. I just hope the author isn't getting tired of Maggie and it's showing in the writing. Overall, did not like this book.
