Review

An excellent resource for Visual Basic programmers looking to interface hardware through standard ports. Anyone designing hardware to work with a parallel port is well advised to add this book to their library. -- Personal Engineering and Instrumentation News, Paul Schreier, May 1997If you need to do any development of parallel port devices or want to get a bit-level understanding of the port's inner workings, I strongly recommend Parallel Port Complete. -- Bill Machrone, PC Week, July 20, 1998If you want to learn about PC-based parallel ports, then you need a copy of Jan Axelson's Parallel Port Complete. Good stuff. -- Electronics Now, Jeff Holtzman, Aug. 1997It's been awhile since I've seen a book as practical as this one. Parallel Port Complete is a real keeper! -- Nuts & Volts, Joseph Carr, March 1997The book is written in a very readable style and starts off with the basics; you don't have to be a hardware guru to read it. If you think you might ever need to access a parallel port (under any operating system), this book is for you. -- Windows Developer's Journal, Feb. 1998

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for the home gageteer. The author Jan Axelson is a rare example of someone that knows her stuff, explains it well to novices, and provides excellent generic examples of code. The examples provided cover situations such as; exporting data bits out thru the parallel port, reading info from the data port, searching for data ports and addresses, and using the parallel port to communicate pc to pc. Seldom do you find a "can-do" person that provides excellent instruction at a beginner's level. The fascination of this book is that as home computers become more powerful, they are still limited in their effect on the external environment, except through dedicated peripherals, such as printers, scanners, etc. With this book, a pc port relay kit (purchased off the internet), and maybe a semester of Visual Basic instruction and " you da man ". Once you can open and close a relay connected to your parallel port from a visual basic program you are off and running. Most electrical devices in you home become fair game. This book needs an update, except for a Tour-de Force in the beginning chapters of code segments in Pascal, Assembler And Quick-Basic, the remainder of the book is in Visual basic 4.0. This reader had no problem importing the examples provided on the enclosed floppy disk into Visual Basic 5.0 . This author has also written a sister book "The Complete Serial Port ", and it is on my "must read " list.

I wanted to know if and how I could use the parallel port to input data from my old Heathkit weather station. It is a free running system that displays in and out door temperatures, barometric pressure and wind speed and direction. It stores the maximum and minimum values of the above too. If I could get the data into my PC, I could archive and analyze it. This book helped me understand the port data lines and how they are used to talk to the peripheral connected to it. It is an old book, Copyright 2000, so the sample programs are in Visual Basic 4.0. I managed to get the idea and use it in my Visual Basic.NET 2003. Using the Inpout32.dll, I can send and get data from the parallel port. I have a ways to go to build the interface box but it does look promising. I have Windows XP Home ED. and a 'Home-brew' PC. running at 2 G Hz.

Did not include disk as was advertised. The disk has a .dll file which was the point of ordering this in the first place as most web sites have pulled the file for some reason. They all refer to this book which was suppose to include the file on disk. The book shown even has a pitcher of the disk on the front. The book I received doesn't have the picture. Not as advertised.

very good

Very good

The software reference is very good. The Parallel Port really hasn't changedat all, so for hardware, this is a good book. Also the software interfaces can still be used. They have been updatedto work with Vista and higher. For Windows 2000 and up, printer reading can be done with LPTx.4(LPT1 -> 1, etc).I also like the fact it shows you limitations. A lot of the MicrosoftOS limitations apply to other ports types as well.

Generally a good book. The information is dated, but the concepts remain the same.I thought the book was to be a refresher for me. Yes and No.The very fundamental idea of testing for parallel locations (address) requires effort. The usage of .DLL mentioned on the authors website is pretty much missing from action.

Excellente and complete, very usefull.

#104,006 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I liked this book and its flinty protagonist, Molly. She's sassy, independent, and she doesn't take any crap from anybody. Her adventures in Florida and the Big Apple are picaresque and well-drawn---and man, does this gal know how to wreak revenge. Her pranks and antics had me rolling in the aisles. So I admire her brio, her bravura, and dare I say it---her balls. What I dislike: she's just too conceited. Her head is so big that she couldn't fit through a doorway and her mouth so outsized she could eat a banana sideways. After awhile, I tired of hearing about her academic and athletic prowess, her dark beauty, and her sculpted, muscular body. Also, it's more interesting when a character has some kind of personal arc. I know this is a memoir, but Molly starts out rock hard and stays that way: never is she troubled in the least by doubt or uncertainty. Victims are boring, but so are the overconfident and cocksure. In addition, Brown's writing is not that strong. The tenses waver and the grammar is sketchy. Still, I recommend this coming of age memoir, because Brown is a entertaining and wicked wit.

I first heard of this book & author from one of my all-time fave movies, " Educating Rita". It was written in the early 70's and for those times would not be in a high school library, nowadays probably considered quite tame, even the norm. Molly is an illegitimate child raised by her vindictive aunt Carrie & kind uncle Carl. It chronicles her from 7 y.o. Until early adulthood when sheLands in New York City. Molly is s lesbian as is real-life author, Rita Mae Brown. Molly is a force to reckoned with she has all the odds stacked against her & every reason to fail, but through her fierce determination & hard times she always seems to survive & beat the odds . She speaks her mind, even to the point of getting a beating for it. She isn't a pleaser and lives life on her own terms. It was so good I literally finished half the book the first day. Definitely a piece of history & in some courses, required reading. Do yourself a favor & buy this gem & be ready to be sweetly surprised. Very progressive for it's time, too!

I understand that the book is important for having addressed lesbianism and feminism at a time when those subjects were not much discussed. In that sense, it's a groundbreaking book, and I respect that, On the other hand, I simply did not like the protagonist, Molly. She is extremely scornful of those who do not share her own views about what is and is not a worthwhile life, and she can be truly cruel at times. She's is simply not someone I would want to spend time with.

As a straight male reader, I found this to be a fascinating coming of age novel and a glimpse of what it was like growing up as a lesbian a generation or so ago. More than that, though, it's a very compelling story about a person who insists on being herself in spite of the pressure put on her by just about everyone she encounters. If there were more people with such a strong sense of individuality in this world, we'd probably have a much easier time accepting one another for who we are--we'd have no choice.

I love a good light weight paperback that you can carry in your purse wherever you go! This book was a very easy read. Only took me about 3 days without having to force myself. I'm not a big reader, so that's a big deal. It was entertaining, and SURPRISINGLY sensitive for the the year that it was written. The N word pops up about 2-3 times, but it's always by some racist that you're supposed to hate. I was expecting race and gender to be handled very poorly, but I was pleasantly surprised how sensitive the book was. One slip up: I always hate it when brown people's skin is described using lattes and food, but for the year it was written, I can overlook that particular shortcoming. Strongly recommend it!

Read this when it was first published and adored it. At the time I was asked how I could like a lesbian book and was asked if I was secretly gay. REALLY. I don't know what made me think of it again but as a 65y/o I believe I got ever more from it this time. I loved molly then and now. I wished then and I was more like her and now happy that I have more of molly in me. Still not gay but still a lover of fabulous women. Fiction or non fiction. Thank you Rita Mae for Molly and Dolly. Can't wait to start six of one, bingo and loose lips.

Definitely radical when it was first published. The book was recommended, and it was kind of what I expected. It took real bravery to write this type of book, and Molly is an incredible character. She is a little adult, completely herself, absolutely fearless, and I think it's amazing. She does the impossible because of her indomitable spirit. Her father, Carl, truly loves her, and encourages her, despite her mother's fear and ignorance. Molly will not be defeated, regardless of being challenged at a nativity play, or confronted by a principal, or the dean of women. She soars - breezing through high school, thriving in college despite her lackadaisical roommate, forcing her way through New York. I like the end. It's not her mother, Carrie's revelation, so much as Molly's recognition of what Carrie went through that is most poignant, and despite all that toughness and meanness, Carrie loves Molly. I like this book, and though Molly is admirable, I didn't always like her. Still, it was a pleasure to read.

Full of great laughs and touching queer solidarity. I’ll always thank my friend for having brought this book to my attention. If you’re looking for reckless and unashamed affirmation, you’ll find it here.

Review

"Winner of the 2011 Award for Excellence in Reference Works, Association of American Publishers""Richard Crossley, Winner of the 2012 ABA Robert Ridgway Award for Publications in Field Ornithology, American Birding Association""Co-Winner of the 2012 Bronze Medal in Environment/Ecology/Nature, Independent Publisher Book Awards""The biggest new entry into the field is The Crossley ID Guide, which has turned the traditional field guide on its ear. Anyone who has birded regularly in Cape May, N.J., has seen Richard Crossley and his giant zoom lens stalking at dawn, dusk and in between. He has, a la Kenn Kaufman, digitally lifted the birds out of those photos and then dropped them--perched, walking, flying, diving, swimming--into a habitat that is one big photographic background, thus creating a picture window onto each species. Simultaneously we see the species up close, far away, in flight, at a feeder, in flocks, sitting, singing. Scale is up for grabs, with some of the birds so small and hidden that you don't see them until a second or third look. But the effect is engaging, exciting and akin to the real experience of birding, where so much happens on the wing, at difficult distance and in odd light."---Laura Jacobs, Wall Street Journal"[Richard Crossley] tries to squeeze in as much reality as he can onto every printed page.... Why put such images in an identification guide? Crossley calls it reality birding. He believes that you can become a better birder by studying the distant birds and comparing them to the larger close-up images. By noticing the similarities between the different images, you will learn to focus on the features that remain constant for a particular species. The rationale is compelling, and I think Crossley's approach might actually work.... And, in case you were wondering, I love [this book]."---Michael Szpir, American Scientist"A major innovation in identification guides in that it is designed to teach you to see differently. If you follow the program, this book will make you a better birder. Following the British practice, the Crossley Guide is intended for study at home--not as a field guide. . . . This is for anyone who wants to improve his or her birding skills."---Wayne Mones, Audubon blog"What's so different about the Crossley ID Guide? Everything. Crossley has designed his guide to reflect the way we see and identify birds. We identify birds by their size, shape, structure, behavior, habitat, and field marks. We [see] birds at close range, at middle and long distances, on the ground, in flight, in trees, and on the water. . . . If you want to be a better birder you will find the new Crossley ID Guide to be [a] major innovation and a valuable tool."---Wayne Mones, Audubon.org"[The Crossley ID Guide] is innovative, exciting even, in the way the reader can interact with what is in effect a real-life method to bird identification, reality birding, unlike the traditional pointed arrow, look-and-learn approach. . . . I have to say that each bird scene page contains a wealth of detailed visual information that made me look at not only the overall montage of birds, but also each of the subtly different individuals, and to even then search again through the page for more birds to look at. Just like a birding trip in fact."---Phil Slade, Another Bird Blog"I really can't wait to get my eyes on this thing."---Grant McCreary, Birder's Library"Richard Crossley has conceived and actually implemented a breakout idea for a general field guide to bird identification. . . . [W]hat (my old friend) Richard Crossley is doing with his idea of image, gestalt, wordlessness and recognition is mind-blowing. And it will revolutionize bird ID practice, discussions, and the scope of what each species is. Whether you have seen a bird and want to figure it out or you have been perusing his intuitive selection of what/how a bird looks and then you see it and know it too, I think you'll find Richard's guiding eye a game-changer for your birding endeavors." I have found the style, information, wealth of photos set on normal habitat backgrounds, and layout to be a fantastic addition to our home library. I checked it out of the library after hearing a Richard Crossley interview - which was really helpful to me in understanding why he created this different style of Birding guide. He says it is not meant to be a field guide (due to its size), but it is awesome to use if you take notes/sketch/photograph a bird and want to ID it later on - which we do regularly. I kept renewing the book until i had to return it to the library... and on that day I ordered my own copy. ;-) I want to add all of Crossley’s guides to our home library now... and each one improves in some way. Bottom line is this is going to get used all the time. Crossley even taught me how to be a better birder - not just to simply be able to ID birds. I’m a fan.

I know many people are devoted to Sibley's, but I actually bought this guide before it since I already had National Geographic's guide when I started out. The reason I went for this first is sometimes it's really quite nice to have the photographs rather than drawings. Drawings can show all the exact field marks a bird should have, but with the photography in this guide you get a better sense of what lighting actually does to how you see birds outdoors. So I find it easier to compare the guide to what I'm seeing many cases and have better success with the overall look for what birds should be like in the field. The other big draw for Crossley is that you see what kind of environment each bird is most commonly found as part of the picture, as well as (usually) shots of each in flight and in various common poses. I feel that as someone who has middling skills at identification these are some great clues for what to look for as I come upon species I'm less familiar with. I think for more skilled birders this guide is just as valuable too of course, but I think it could give an edge for the less skilled if they're able to follow along with some of the visual cues in this guide. If you're on the fence and wondering if you need another guide, just go for it. You won't be disappointed!

For active birders who already know the basic species, this book is probably great. I am trying to identify my Appalachian Mountain back yard birds and this is definitely not the book! I know all the basic sunflower seed birds (junco, towhee, titmouse, cardinal, blue jay, chickadee, etc.)I've diversified my food sources and can't positively identify many of my new birds. The comparison between the downy and hairy woodpeckers were wonderful, but if I didn't have the two side by side I couldn't have done it. The ones with tons of "badly photoshopped" pictures simply add to confusion (using my 13 year old daughter's description). They are from the views for a field guide (someone with training and binoculars) and not for a backyard.

An inveterate collector and user of bird field guides, I bought this based on reviews I read describing the very different approach Crossley took in compiling the book. I've found it very useful, but don't expect to use it in the field. My wife and I are wildlife photographers. This book has been indispensable when we photographed a new species or a familiar species in unfamiliar plumage. We frequently use multiple books to confirm IDs of particularly difficult birds. Crossley's has become our top choice behind the book we do take into the field (usually Sibley's). Crossley has assembled an amazing collection of photos of a very comprehensive list of species in a variety of plumages. With them, he's complied composite images putting the birds against a backdrop of the species typical habitat. The resulting composite photos aren't realistic enough to convince a viewer that they were photographed as depicted, but they're generally excellent for ID purposes.

"Oh, birding is like stamp collecting -- Boring!"That was my nerdy friend, dismissively glancing at Richard Crossley's "The Crossley ID Guide - Eastern Birds," on my coffee table."I didn't know you were a birder," he said."I'm not," I answered."I don't get it," he said. "You find another pretty stamp and paste it in an album. You sight another pretty bird and put it on your list. What real good is it?""You're missing the point," I said. "With birds and other wildlife rapidly diminishing, birding's annual surveys keep track of migrations, catalog increases or decreases in numbers, and detail losses of environment, as from industrialization and encroaching suburbia. Like canaries in a coal mine, birds reflect present dangers, telling us what we have to protect. Rescue is not only for the birds, but for ourselves."Sure, my friend granted, birds are beautiful, but many are so distant, tiny, flighty, and fast-moving. How can you make out much about them? You don't have to be the genius, scientist, and painter John Audubon was, I said. You just learn to see the details in what you're looking at. That takes smart eyes and the right equipment, like anything else. And you have to take copious notes, the way Audubon did in making his detailed paintings.Unfortunately, back in those days, Audubon felt he had to resort to killing specimens with fine birdshot, then using wires to present them in different natural positions. Crossley and today's birders use fine scopes and cameras . . . and plenty of patience.Crossley emphasizes that the best book to take with you for bird watching is not a field guide, but a notebook, to record every detail you can see. Crossley's guide is big (about 8 by 10, and over 500 pages) and shows you what to look for. Full-page color photographs, culled from thousands he has taken, show all the eastern species in all their variety, up close and far away in typical flight patterns. He guides you in noting shapes, relative sizes, and usual behaviors. The goal is to discern birds' gender, age, and feather patterns. Are they juveniles or adults? Note the condition of the feathers. Are they worn from wear, and in process of molting? On his beginning pages Crossley has careful visual guides to what species you are seeing, whether they are Waterbirds of Swimming, Flying, or Walking types, or whether they are Landbirds classified as Gamebirds, Raptors, Aerial Landbirds, or Songbirds. Crossley's photos tell the story. He shows you what you are seeing. From the common names, you can parenthesize over to the scientific, should you want. Most importantly, he quickly makes you comfortable with the handy -- and I would say almost indispensable -- four-letter ID Codes, like AMRO for American Robin, YWAR for Yellow Warbler, NOCA for Northern Cardinal, COLO for Common Loon, YLGU for Yellow-legged Gull, COTE for the Common Tern, even RFBO for Red-footed Booby. The names are fun. The book is fun, and the photos far outdo Audubon as a practical guide to ID the birds you are seeing. Crossley's hundreds of pages are compilations of thousands of photographs. Crossley has been generous in his time and wanderings. He knows more and we follow to learn more. The book is worth getting and absorbing. The learning is how to see what you are looking at. Happy birding, y'all, including my nerdy friend.
