So, this book is called "The Vintage Baker," and it does include some authentic vintage recipes...at the very back...and the author goes on and on about how boring and unimaginative vintage cooking and baking is, which is really a shame. The majority of recipes in this book are the author's "improvements" to recipes they've run across in vintage advertising pamphlets. But that's not why I'm only giving this book two stars.I'm giving this book two stars because the first recipe I made out of it was a dismal flop. I was so excited to make the blackberry-lime pie, blackberry being my wife's absolute favorite. The crust barely came together even with double the amount of liquid called for, but that's not the worst of it. I won't even get to know how the crust tastes or feels when baked properly, because this filling DID NOT SET AT ALL, and soaked into the crust and made it floppy and soggy including most of the lattice top. After leaving the pie to cool overnight I literally poured a cup of liquid out of it. I had cooked berries sitting in sweetened liquid instead of a thickened, cohesive pie filling. So, I guess if I want to make blackberry-lime pie successfully, I'll have to creatively add some lime juice and zest to my family's boring, old, vintage, unimaginative berry pie recipe. Sometimes, you shouldn't mess with the classics.

What a beautifully-done, gorgeous cookbook! Jessie Sheehan's meticulous, easy-to-follow instructions make the recipes very accessible to the home baker (and the Alice Gao photographs are simply beautiful to look at and practically jump off the page). Jessie has a flair for explaining to the non-professional WHY certain ingredients and techniques work -- and as an extremely non-professional baker myself (I've always preferred cooking, with its more elastic margin of error!), those explanations have given me the confidence to try my hand at baking things I wouldn't have tried before. And, there's just something homey and nostalgic about baking treats that call to mind a nicer, simpler time (but without the odd and often processed ingredients our grandmothers used out of necessity or Depression-era frugality). This book is a little treasure (including the cute little vintage baking pamphlet included in the book itself), as are its recipes (the Butterscotch-Potato Chip Balls and the Silver Cake are a MUST).

These recipes are inspred by rather than true to vintage recipes. The tweeks mentioned in the description change the intended and as written recipes. For example the vintage recipes call for butter and buttermilk but the auther subs oil and yogurt. I wanted to try truly vintage recipes. The recipes in this book are modernised. Not what I wanted at all.

I love this cookbook. I spent nearly an hour just reading it when arrived, because the pictures are beautiful, the recipes intriguing and the stories interesting. I dreamt that night of Molasses Doughnuts with Chocolate Ginger Glaze, and can't wait until I have enough people in the house to justify making them! It's important to know is that the author has not provided an exact recreation of vintage recipes but has used them as a jumping off point, so the flavors or technique might be updated. So far I've made the Peanut Butter Fingers with Salty Milk Chocolate Glaze (a huge hit), Fig Pincushions (so yummy), Lemon Chiffon Pie with Coconut Whipped Cream (prize worthy, for lemon and coconut fans), Blackberry Lime Pie (the cream cheese crust is extraordinary, filling delicious though I substituted corn starch for arrowroot which I didn't have, and my lattice looked great!), and the unbelievable Butterscotch Pecan Curls (easy enough for the yeast phobic). The instructions are very clear, so I think that even novice bakers will get great results, but there is lots for the experienced baker to enjoy as well. I'm planning on bringing the Blueberry Angel Food Dream to a Fourth of July Picnic, since it's color-appropriate and impressive.

Definitely returning this book - not an impressive collection of "vintage" recipes -

Cutest little cookbook. We got one as a gift at work (a bakery) and I immediately bought one for my own. The introduction had me hooked and the recipes all have a unique spin on them.

Simply put, I love this cookbook! The recipes take me back to a simpler time, and as a grandmother who loves baking with my five little granddaughters, I especially enjoy the clear instructions and the exquisite photographs. Every grandmother should own this cookbook. I have already purchased several more copies to give to my daughters in law and some friends for Christmas. Five stars from this baker. Thank you, Jessie Sheehan!

I've made several recipes from this book, and they've all been hits at home (up next is the Baked Alaska!). In fact, I even bought a few extra copies to give to friends who bake. For me, it's a cool mix of updated old favorites and vintage recipes that I've never heard of, but am glad are getting the chance to shine again (I don't think there's anyone who wouldn't devour a slice of Sheehan's "silver cake"). I love the look of this book, too-- it just feels fun and the photography is gorgeous.

A truly amazing book. One whose advice is so simple and clear that it seems obvious until one moment you put it down and find that you're a changed person. I'm typing this review after having finished a rough draft of a creative project I'd put aside for a year. I'm high with the feeling of "done." Might have I done it without this book? Perhaps. But reading it helped me spot the resistance creeping up on me when what I was producing wasn't perfect and fight it and get to done. This is probably the millionth review of this book, and Seth Godin probably doesn't care, but he changed my life and for that I am grateful.

We are all artists. That is the point that author Seth Godin is trying to get across in his book Linchpin. His objective with writing this book is to change the way people look at their work. The goal is to inspire people to no longer follow the norm, but instead create their own paths. With doing this they will build for themselves a more fulfilling, successful and rewarding career thus becoming better employees. When people are passionate about their work, it is in their nature to do whatever it takes to succeed. Having passion, a strong work ethic and drive to succeed is what makes a person a Linchpin. Linchpin – this funny little eight-letter word is the main concept of this book. What does it mean to be the linchpin of a company? How does one become a linchpin? Can anybody be a linchpin? All of these questions were addressed in the book. Before addressing all those questions, Godin first explains his definition of a linchpin. He does not mean for people to be like the small pin on a wheel. Instead of the literal definition, he considers a linchpin to be “an individual who can walk into chaos and create order, someone who can invent, connect, create, and make things happen.” (pg VI). Based off of this definition, he considers a linchpin to be a person that the company would not function with out. This person sees the problem clearly and does not panic. Instead they develop innovative solutions and create their own path. A linchpin never follows a map; they create it. When Godin looks at the corporate world, he sees many cogs. There are far to many people that blindly follow the rules set before them. They show up to work, do as they’re told and then leave. These people are compliant, under paid and in pain because they are not following their passions. This is Godin’s target audience. In order to inspire, you must speak to those in need. From Godin’s research he has developed seven abilities that make a great linchpin. All of these abilities make the linchpin a unique asset that is indispensible to the company. These seven abilities are 1) Providing a unique interface between members of the organization 2) Delivering unique creativity 3) managing a situation or organization of great complexity 4) leading customers 5) inspiring staff 6) providing deep domain knowledge 7) possessing a unique talent. Godin describes each of these talents in detail and explains why if a person is special enough to possess all seven, then they can be an indispensable worker. When explaining his point about why linchpins are the artists of their industry, Godin used a few good examples to help bring his point across. Artists create things, whether it is a beautiful painting, sculpture or new business model. All artists are innovators, creators and visionaries. The sign of a true artist is when they see something that’s so different and yet works so well. While Ev Williams was creating twitter, he did not use a conventional business model. When people first saw his project, they thought it was absurd. No one had ever seen such a thing. However, it’s uniqueness helped spread the word about twitter. Now it is a hugely successful form of social media. By throwing in the real life example of Ev Williams and Twitter into the book, it made Godin’s point more concrete. Without William’s quotes and the well-known success of Twitter, the point would have just been an abstract theory. Because I know the reality of Twitter, I could conceptualize the problems Williams faced and now I see how he overcame them. By using real life examples, Godin was able to better prove his point. While I felt like Godin had some great examples, he also had some that were sub par. There were many times where the book seemed more like a cliché inspirational speech, than anything of substance. When discussing how one becomes a linchpin, Godin wrote that we all could be CEO’s of top companies. He used the example of Richard Branson and how he built his airline company. Godin tells the story of his idea for Virgin Atlantic and then goes on to say that anyone could do Branson’s job if they thought creatively enough and knew what to look for. While this is a sweet and thoughtful thing to say; it is not accurate. In reality not everyone can be a CEO. It takes a lot of leadership skills, vision and intelligence to be a good leader. It’s important for a good leader to always be looking for new opportunities, make important decisions and understand your audience. Each of those adjectives are characteristics that Branson possesses, however not everyone has them or can learn them. Even if someone did, they are not the only qualities that make a good linchpin or guarantee success. Godin devotes a whole chapter on “becoming a linchpin”. Even if someone reads the advice a thousand times that does not guarantee that they can apply it. While every one is special and has a lot to offer the world, that does not mean they will be the linchpin of their company. It takes practice, intelligence and a lot more than just reading a book to teach the skills needed to succeed. Overall this book would get a B rating on a traditional college grading system. It brings up some interesting points about how to become a better worker as well as helped me better understand not to let my fear inhibit me from trying a new method. I learned that the best inventions were created by people who looked at things in a different way than the average person. They were able to see the problem, understand it and then had the courage to try something new. This is a useful skill that any body can use in their work or while at home. While that was a useful skill, Godin had a tendency to ramble on in the book. Sometimes his lessons sounded more like a cliché speech, then something I could see myself applying. Godin has accomplished a lot in his life. He has seen much success in the marketing world. If he had incorporated some of those experiences in the book, it would have felt more genuine and less like someone preaching to me about having a good work ethic. This would have helped me to better visualize how his points are feasible. Despite the rambling, the book does have some worthwhile points that are important for anyone in the workplace to understand. For anyone who is just entering the workforce or feels stuck at his or her job, I would recommend this book as a useful guide on how to navigate the corporate world.

Some complain that this book doesn't have enough technical details, the way a textbook would. This is instead a book that will change your mindset about work and careers. It's a fun read and very valuable for people who want extraordinary careers.

There are many quotable excerpts from this book and though it can be repetitive at times, the overall message is positive and inspiring. If you’re a quick reader, the repetition will give you deja vu of earlier chapters, but the author hits the nail on the head. (Bonus: A passerby on my commute struck up a conversation over the book as I was holding it and mentioned that the author was equally inspiring in person.)

Too repetitive and certainly nothing groundbreaking. I've read plenty of books in the self-improvement genre, a lot of which I can read from cover to cover with ease. With "LinchPin," I'm sorry to say, my eyes glazed over by page 80. Also, the book was too repetitive and certainly nothing groundbreaking. Oh, and did I mention? The book was too repetitive and certainly nothing groundbreaking.EDIT: I'm changing my review from 1 stars to 3. I mustered up enough courage to finish reading the remainder of the book. After you get beyond the repetitive nature of the first 100 pages, it starts to become a bit less painful and somewhat motivating.

I am using the whole Manhattan Prep system - I have made significant increases due to this system. I'm better at Reading Comp questions than Logical Games or Logical Reasoning - get the other books too. I like that I saved a lot of money by getting the ebook - I purchased the hard copies of LR and LG at bookstore which was about $40 higher than my Amazon kindle version!!! I'm very happy about that!

The book is a bit dull, but it has some useful strategies for RC.I found the later part of book - the timing, comparative passages - more than the first part - the intro and Pear method.

Manhattan Prep's LSAT reading comprehension book was a lovely way to re-familiarize myself with the reading comprehension portion of the LSAT test. It was as though a very calm, older professor was holding my hand and calmly elucidating the steps and skills needed for performing well on the LSAT, reducing my heart rate and re-setting my panic button which has been on "high alert"! This particular volume goes through the reading comprehension portion, which is actually quite tricky. Slowly and deliberately, this book breaks down the concepts and allows you, the reader to calm down and focus on how to understand passages the LSAT way with acronyms and gradual introduction to key skills, particularly analyzing arguments. I wish this wasn't going to be on my reading list for the next few months, but it will be, and I'm appreciative of the calming and appealing approach to breaking down this portion of the behemoth that is LSAT testing.

This book is full of practical guidance and how-to's for an aspiring first time international volunteer, but it doesn't stop there. The author presents solid questions about the impact that volunteering and voluntourism has on communities- both good and bad, and leads the reader through a thorough thought process to consider how to wisely research and choose a volunteer program that is right for them AND will truly benefit the community it intends to serve- longterm. A great guide if you're considering a volunteer vacation or a first time long term volunteer opportunity abroad.

A good book to prevent from scams and traps in the volunteer world. The personal history is inspiring.

Some good tips, definitely worth reading, but beyond the first read I'm not sure it's much of a referencebook.

If you are considering volunteer travel but don't know where to begin, this book covers everything. In thailand at a village I'll be working in there are a number of failed projects because the locals didnt have an interest or ability in getting them fixed.Lots of great things in this book along those lines that help you think through which group to go with and how to be a more effective volunteer.

Azeem Ibrahim has a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He has been a Research Fellow with the International Security Program at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, a World Fellow at Yale, Fellow and member of the board of directors at the Institute for Social Policy Understanding, and an Adjunct Research Professor at the Strategic Studies Institute, US Army War College. He founded and chairs a private grant-giving foundation (www.ibrahimfoundation.com) focusing on innovative community projects, and served as a reservist in the UK's 4th Battalion Parachute Regiment.

"The Rohingyas" is comprehensive, well-written, and urgently needed. The Rohingyas have been a persecuted minority in Burma for decades, a persecution that has accelerated under the current government of Aung San Suu Kyi. "The Rohingyas" presents research to suggest that the persecution amounts to genocide, an accusation that recent events seem to be confirming. Sadly, the response from the international community has been feeble. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the historical and contemporary context of this ongoing crisis. One hopes that it will also help bring additional attention to the crisis, and halt the genocide before it's too late.

The book contains many valuable information. But it was obviously rushed to the publisher because of the current situation and written before the August-Fall 2017 crisis (hence the "Epilogue" after the "Conclusion"). Most the book is therefore half-baked and it certainly is not an academic book, as proven by the bibliography, the phrasing, and the content. I also suspect the author never stepped in Rohingya territories, never met any Rohingyas, or carried out fieldwork anywhere --to be fair he does not claim he did, but then most of his work is based on online newspapers, including many of the book's most important assertions. The covers asserts it is a genocide, then most of chapter 5 is spent explaining Rohingyas are in pre-genocide situation and that "the situation could escalate" (p. 114). Also on p. 109: "In the case of the Rohingyas, these requirements [for genocide] are beginning to be met." And later: "It is hugely important that we call a genocide a genocide for practical reasons: not just the act of genocide, but the fear that such an act is imminent triggers requirement for the UN Security Council to take direct actions." Then it is not a genocide (or "not yet", as the author asserts), and either the author is not aware that China seats on that council, preventing it from taking "direct actions" (what would that be?) or the book is lost on speculations.

Well researched and presented in a simple and succinct language,for any reader to understand the tragic fate of Rohingyas.

Anyone moved by the ongoing plight of the Rohingya people will find in this book a thorough explanation of how this has happened.

A detailed journey into how the Rohingya become the most persecuted minority in the worldIbrahim has produced a thoroughly researched book which documents the roots of the slow motion genocide against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar. He clinically demolishes the main accusations made against the Rohingya by the Buddhist extremist such as the Rohingya being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and having no roots in Myanmar. Ibrahim tackles this head on and uses extensive archival documentation dating back to 1799 to expose the fabrication of such ideas. This is a must read if you want to understand what is quite likely to be the next genocide of our time.

All are perfect, beautiful and much useful to me.

She writes of this beautifully..shes an amazing writer,and to have suffered so and to write about it puts you right there sometimes in her mind...shes brillent....to have suffered so..and to put it into words as she does is quite an undertaking....I Thank Her so much.....

I've read several books on bipolar disorder and this is one of the best. Jamison writes beautifully and from an interesting perspective as both a clinician/researcher and a person with bipolar disorder. To be clear, this book does not offer suggestions on how to manage the disorder or detailed descriptions of the symptoms. I would recommend reading other books for that information and then read this one. Jamison does explain some of the terminology but it's mostly focused on her personal experiences. For example, lithium works very well for Jamison and she repeatedly talks about how important it is in managing her bipolar. But not everyone with bipolar disorder responds well to lithium and Jamison doesn't really talk about other options. That's okay for a memoir like this; I just wouldn't recommend starting here. Its more important to know what to expect first and then dive into excellent memoirs like this one. As the wife of a person newly diagnosed with bipolar, I found Jamison's story both reassuring (she is functioning really well now) and terrifying (it took her a long time to accept the diagnosis and longer to accept taking meds consistently). A very good read.

I liked the perspective from a life long researcher of the illness combined with self experience. I would have liked slightly more details of the episodes (thoughts, feelings, experiences etc.) I am trying desperately to understand what my child experiences. Ive read enough to be terrified for him but I want a more detailed description. I re amend this book to anyone seeking to further understand as I want how it feels to go through this, how to explain it to those around you and why they need to know. It is so important for those around that are caring for someone with this illness to know what to look for and what to do when they see things that need to be taken care of!! Empathy I believe is easier for people to feel when they have a basic understanding of an issue. I will continue my search for more information, I believe there is always something new to learn, something new to try! There is no cure, but there is hope for a fulfilling life with happiness!

I had to read this book for one of my college classes. It's about 200 pages, and I read it from start to finish in a couple hours. So it goes to show that it was interesting and entertaining enough to keep me from putting it down, even though I had two more weeks to finish the book. Some parts of it seem oddly written, almost silly, almost less like a professional novel and more like you're listening to someone casually talk. However, it was intriguing and truly a window into the mind of someone facing mental illness. A completely different perspective than learning about mental illnesses in a textbook style manner.

Incredibly heartbreaking but hope-filled memoir about manic depressive illness. I now feel as if I can face my illness head on and face it without fear, with knowledge stored in my mind from this book. Compassion and expertise combined with personal experience makes this one of the best books I have read about this illness I share with the author.

As someone who knows what depression is, I recently began reading a few autobiographies of persons who have coped with depression. I previously read and was highly impressed by Kay Jamison's book Night Falls Fast-Understanding Suicide, and looked forward with high hopes to this one.In reading the reviews prior to purchase, I was intrigued by the "rich girl" descriptions of the author; ready to compare her childhood and life to my own, it turned out to be quite the contrast with little to bridge the gap. Unable to relate to her on that level, I was still able to absorb and appreciate the facts given concerning her bipolar illness.Besides a look at bipolar, this book describes quite a privileged life. Besides social status, Jamison was fortunate to have had a life in a far more functional family of origin and social circle than have many. As a clinical therapist, she is surely aware of this.As she tells it, it seems that her amazing good fortune never failed, as she continually found a reliable supply of social and professional support. Her notable career advancement for someone with the misfortune of having so serious a mental illness seems remarkable.Not being able to study, read, work or do anything for long stretches; having considerable free time; not attending class; failing college courses; not to mention severe mood swings and refusing to take her medication ... yet through it all, not only holding her own in prestigious universities but also obtaining assistantships, internships, grants, and advanced degrees, being accepted to the faculty, and eventually attaining tenure.Surely she had rejections and setbacks, personal and professional, yet she doesn't detail these things. Recounting the obstacles she surely had may have made her more of a multi-dimensional and interesting, relatable human being. After all, the book is selling the person, as this is an important part of her life story.The only women mentioned in the book are the author's mother, who sounds wonderful, and her sister, with whom the author does not get along. I wonder if the author has put any reflection at all into her relationship with members of her own gender and if so why she neglected to mention it in this book.The personal aside -- this book is a credible recounting of bipolar disorder, recommended as a resource for learning about the illness.
