Even though I loved the movie and the series that inspired this game, I've been burned before by franchise role playing games. Serenity was a welcome surprise.The game system does an excellent job of supporting the same kind of story telling that the movie and tv series did, with strong character driven plotting. It avoids the frustrations and slowdowns of other systems, yet seems familiar enough that it isn't a major mental shift.The book also provides a large amount of useful background information. While some of it is on the world of Firefly and Serenity, the really good bits are the free resources it provides for game masters. A very thoroughly fleshed out set of stock characters speeds preparation of game sessions and provides a good quick backup when new stock characters are needed in game. Deck plans for a variety of common star ships are also useful guides.The production quality of the book is good. The binding seems strong, but it is a perfect-bound hardcover rather than a smyth-sewn binding that some other companies are using. I always prefer smyth-sewn because of its durability, but it does add to the cost. Editing was quite good and the writing style easy to follow. Typography was solid, although slightly more differentiation between heading fonts could be desired.Overall, there were no show stoppers with this book or this system. We've enjoyed our sessions and didn't find any points where we had to fill in rules gaps. If you liked the Firefly series or the Serenity movie, and you're looking for a new game, I highly recommend this book.
Nobody plays this game as they are still bitter about it being canceled. Never ran a game or a campaign. I blame a lack of friends, and a lack of people wanting to be anyone but a damned brown coat. Seriously people, if everyone has a brown coat war story, that is completely fictional, that's fine, but some of you people need to play other damned characters. anyway, the pictures are nice.
This is an attempt at making a roleplaying game from the material in the "Serenity" movie. Of course we all know that "Serenity" is just a feature film continuation of the "Firefly" TV series, but -- because of licensing problems -- this is only based on the movie. So lovers of the 'verse are going to find some things, especially characters like Badger and Saffron/Bridget/Yolanda/WhateverHerRealNameIs, missing.And there are concessions to the game system. While most characters of "Serenity" fit pretty well into this RPG, River Tam's character description is definitely toned down. There was clearly an attempt at making this NOT for powergamers: as in real life, combat is generally quickly over, with unhappy consequences. And there was a concerted effort to tweak the nose of the most popular RPG system, which uses a d20 (20-sided die) for most game operations; Serenity uses everything BUT: d2 (a coin flip), d4, d6, d8, d10, and d12.In most RPGs you have a fixed score in each of your character's abilities, and add a standard-sized die roll to that fixed number to determine your performance each time; the fixed score advances occasionally as the character gains experience. In the Serenity RPG you get bigger dice to roll as you gain experience, and there's no fixed number; the next step up from a d6 is a d8, and so on. After d12, you keep that die and add more, starting over: d12 + d2, d12 + d4, & c. So you have to advance past a d12 to avoid the possibility of a minimum score.There are some other wrinkles in the RPG that I could go on about, but on the whole it's both playable and (with a character that's suited to the storyline) fun.There are two significant drawbacks in the book: no character sheets, and no index. You can search online to find character sheets, but the lack of an index means that it's hard to jump into the Serenity RPG. Expect to spend several hours flipping through the book before you'll be up to speed for your first gaming session. In addition to these two big omissions there are also lots of typos that make reading frustrating (for picky people like me, anyway).As a lover of both Joss Whedon's future universe, and roleplaying games, I'm happy with this product. If you love at least one of these you'll probably like the Serenity RPG just fine.
I bought this simply because I loved the Firefly series, and I play RPGs with my friends. I was unfamiliar with the Cortex system at the time. I like this incarnation of the Cortex system. It is easy to play, moderately easy to learn, and the book is full of "flavor". As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading through the book. It has a feel to it that is reminiscent of the series. I have since tried other products using the Cortex system, but sadly, this one seems to be a unique build and is now out of print. If I get a chance, I will be getting a second copy to for my collection, because me and my friends are wearing this one out.It arrived on time, undamaged, and in the expected condition.
If you're like me, you don't have the time or know the types of people that would play an RPG. Nevertheless, this book will really be of great resource for any Firefly/Serenity fan.A wealth of details and descriptions of items of the Verse from planets to ships is present. Which is great for the average browncoat to a hardcore roleplayer.To roleplayers, which I am one, just don't get a chance to do it as much as I'd like. I really like how they've done the character creation system. Character's are required to at least have one positive and negative trait and many more if you choose so willing. I think the depth of the characters from the shows has really been captured and attempted to be recreated rather well in this form.Again, to roleplayers and non-roleplayers alike, if you're a Firefly/Serenity fan, you will love this book.
