About the Author
Curtis E. A. Karnow is a Judge of the San Francisco Superior Court, assigned to the complex litigation department. He is an author of Rutter's Civil Procedure Before Trial (West/Thomson Reuters). He has taught at the University of California Hastings College of Law and lectured at the business schools at the University of Michigan and the University of California, as well as the law schools at the University of San Francisco, Stanford, New York University, and Yale; and he teaches civil litigation to new and experienced California judges. Judge Karnow graduated from Harvard College and the University of Pennsylvania Law School where he was an editor of the law review. He served as Assistant United States Attorney and clerked for Louis H. Pollak (E.D.Pa.). While in private practice, Judge Karnow specialized in antitrust, intellectual property, computer and internet law.

This is an outstanding resource for trial lawyers. I not only plan to rely on it myself, I bought a number of copies to give to younger lawyers with whom I work.
The cover of this book drew me in, and I enjoyed the read immensely even though I am not a lawyer. Highly readable, entertaining and consummately well-written, the book is a valuable primer on clear thinking and argument that has proved useful to me as an educator.Chapter 1 hooked me: the author demystifies all that stately courtroom behavior, and had me chuckling as he humorously revealed the effects of the strutting and sputtering authority that many lawyers take on to project an aura of competence. I appreciated the clear explanation of how statistics are often misused in argument (Chapter 2), and the discussion of the use and abuse of expert witnesses at trial (Chapter 6). The book's wisdom and practical advice is relevant and applicable to many situations outside legal practice.Especially for non-lawyer readers interested in understanding legal issues in the news, this is a very useful tool. Highest recommendation.
