I first read this series of books in about 2003 when I was building a home from scratch. As a realtor, surrounded by contractors on a daily basis, the prevailing wisdom at the time was "build the biggest amount of square footage on the biggest lot with an adjustable mortgage and sell it in two years". I was a single woman, one income and although everyone around me was doing well and prospering, I just felt like something wasn't right. Then I read "The Not So Big House" and something spoke to me. I gained the confidence to stand by my guns, keep my house at 1500 square feet (which was plenty big enough) and concentrate on making those square feet as comforting as I could. It wasn't until the house was built and I lived in it for 10+ years that I really appreciated what had been accomplished. The away room with glass doors not only added much light to the interior living area, but the dropped ceiling (only 3.5 inches down, but what a feeling of snuggle it gave the room) made you feel cozy. For about 5 years it was a tiny tv room with a comfy couch. When I needed to work from home, it morphed easily into a sweet home office. The living room stepped the ceiling up to 9 feet in the center only, creating a home that was easy to heat and cool. And the kitchen was actually kind of small, which made cooking there easy and efficient instead of an around the world cruise. When I'd visit the soon-to-be-foreclosed-upon homes of my co-workers, I'd notice how loud and echo-y their no-so-great rooms were. That no one could afford to really heat the place, so I'd be freezing. That a trip around their huge kitchen was just really a pain and not a pleasure. Then I'd come home to my warm little home and feel so blessed. I'd jump in the soaking tub, which was in the guest bathroom as the book suggested, and feel so glad to be home. It's important to remember the time these books were written for. This was an upstart idea! She wasn't encouraging anyone to live in an 850 square foot tiny home as much as to think twice before adding another 850 square feet to an already generously sized home. That bigger wasn't going to solve the issue.I've moved from my cozy home into a slightly larger one built in 1978. There's things that I like, but the cozy feeling is gone. Thus my reason for this book and rereading the others. Some of the pictures may be dated and the concepts need a fresher application, but the timeless concepts work just the same. I highly recommend this book and the others in the series as a primer to read while you are coming up with your ideas. Lots of this stuff is easily folded into your remodel and incorporating it makes a huge difference in how your house will live and take care of you. And here's the thing about a book with dated pictures - if it still looks good after all these years, then you know you've hit on something classic that will still look good in another 20 years. Butcher block, tile and ceiling treatments live through many changes in paint colors and cabinet finishes, right? When I sold my little house to the newly wed's who bought it, they said that it just felt different than other homes they looked at. That it felt sort of safe and warm and bright, while still feeling exceptionally private and not huge but large enough. Something that they just couldn't quite put their finger on felt like home. All credit to these books! There is a lot to learn here!

Overall, I bought this book to give me ideas for a remodel. More specifically, a kitchen remodel. What I like about this book is that it contains plenty of photos. I also like the idea that this book is designed for small modest homes, and gives the reader a chance to consider all of possabilities. if you are looking for a "how to" book this is not the item to consider purchasing. In my opinion it is essentially a primer to generate ideas for a remodel.

The book arrived in like new condition as described. It’s beautiful with many great photos. I bought it as a gift, having bought amazon warehouse items before and having excellent results that items would arrive in condition exactly as described by amazon. I was a little concerned that this Not So Big House book would be too similar or repetitive from previous Not So Big House book by the same author previously given to the same person , but this one focused on Remodeling the Not So Big House, which is the title and precisely the desired topic. Great product. Great warehouse buy.

Referred to Sarah's collection of books when remodeling our 1800's house. Received an architectural education written for the common lay person! Thru the past decade, we've applied the principles explained in her books, and what a HUGE difference they have made in the function/comfort/appearance/coziness/healthfulness of our home! WOW!

I love the philosophy of the not so big house. Having gown up in a 550 sq foot house and raised a family of 5 in a 1200 sq foot house, I enjoy the ideas for creating a house that lives big, but is smaller, easier to heat and cool, and is interesting. Lots of great ideas, and I am a huge fan of built in storage to reduce the need for storage furniture.

I am getting ready to remodel a small home and this book is exactly what I needed. Chock full of ideas and thought provoking suggestions. Great diagrams and photos

I have most of Sarah Susanka's books because I enjoy architecture in general and her writing style in particular; but this book is my favorite. I was surprised it features her own home, but from that first chapter her vision and ideas stand out. This book helps normal people with average houses and tight budgets get the most for their money. She puts function first, but her ideas are practical and enhance what you have not tease you unrealistic projects because let's face it, not everyone can afford a $50,000 kitchen makeover. Instead she explains that simply changes can offer practical solutions that make your house a home that reflects you and meets your needs. I was most impressed that she helped me prioritize projects so I can actually make progress in a time frame that works for me and with a budget I can plan handle.

It was an interesting read; It reinforced some design concepts of ( Wright & Will Trout and other Architect )It helped me overcome a block I had for a Kitchen Renovation ( a Light Bulb moment )It is a continuation of her other books; well worth the time to read & reflect ; and apply the ideas in this book.
