Three things drew me to this novel. First, it takes place in Maine. I’ve always wanted to live on the coast of Maine; it’s just so darn beautiful. Second, sometimes when I reflect upon my life, I think, “This isn’t what I signed up for; this isn’t the way life was supposed to be.” The third reason is the author, Christina Baker Kline. After reading, and loving, Orphan Train and A Piece of the World, Kline is one of my favorite authors and I want to read all the books she has published. And just icing on the cake, the front cover blurb is from Caroline Leavitt, an author I’m just discovering. So I ask you, “How could I resist this novel?”Angela Russo lives in New York City and is thirty-three years old. She is an event planner for one of the lesser-known museums. On her office bulletin board is a cutout magazine photo showing a cottage on the coast of Maine. It portrays such a simple life; the life Angela has always wanted. With her love life is nonexistent, she decides to look into some internet dating sites. A profile name MaineCatch. He’s thirty-five, has ice-blue eyes and lives in Cushing, Maine. Angela spends more time mooning over MaineCatch than she does thinking about the big fundraising event she is planning for the museum. She has to go to Boston on business, and luckily, MaineCatch sails down to meet her. The sparks fly. When the event goes horribly, horribly, horribly wrong, Angela is fired from her job. She decided to move north to be with her catch. Things go horribly, horribly wrong; seems she has misunderstood MaineCatch’s intentions.Without a job to return to, Angela decides to stay in Cushing. She finds a little shack to rent that she can renovate, gets a job in a local coffee house, and begins to rebuild her life. The knack for the Italian cooking she learned from her grandmother rises to the surface. The novel is written in first person, which I think helps add immediacy to the story while Kline’s scenic description have me longing to pack me bags and head Northeast. I was able to live vicariously through Angela. I could barely put this story down and I didn’t want it to end. I hope in the future Kline writes a follow-up novel. The Way Life Should Be 6 out of 5 stars in Julie’s world.

Angela matures over the three months of this well-written story, and I was happy to see that there was still 15% left in my book when it suddenly ended. I don't cook so the pages of recipes at the back weren't my thing. I wanted more of Angela's journey, her life in Maine. Still, I enjoyed the developing of the relationships and laughed at the humor. A good book.

The only other book by Christina Baker Kline that I had read before this was Orphan Train, which I loved. The Way Life Should Be is an entirely different kind of book. It is firmly in the women's fiction genre, bordering on chick lit. I don't say that derisively, as I feel both are valid types of reading material. So, it became clear to me early on reading this book that I had to banish Orphan Train from my mind in order to give The Way Life Should Be a fair shake.I definitely find this book to be more "Women's Fiction" than "Chick Lit." While these two genres are sometimes used interchangeably, for me the line is that Chick Lit is more romantically based while Women's Fiction tends more towards introspection in the characters. There is a small romantic element in this novel, but it is more a plot convention than anything (and leads to what I found to be a rather amusing exchange about halfway through the novel).I liked Angela as a character and I could relate to her--I understand that feeling of not being in the right place and still trying to find home. While I found her family situation less than unique, it still fit with the character. I could completely understand why Angela would move to Maine almost on a whim and, more importantly, I could understand why she stayed.I like Kline's style of writing, but it is different here than I expected after reading Orphan Train. In this book, she is lighter and more prone to humor. Part of this I expect is due to the subject matter, but it is still markedly different from her most recent (and successful) novel. The Way Life Should Be is definitely a lighter read and I think that readers expecting something meatier would be disappointed. However, I think one must judge this book on its own merits and, for me, it is one of the more successful Women's Fiction titles I've read recently

I read this book for a book club. After reading Orphan Train, I was disappointed, expecting much more from the author. Angela, the protagonist, compromised her morals, assuming she had them to begin with, for rolls in the hay with someone she barely knew initially, then decided she really didn't like but kept sleeping with anyway. All as part of trying to figure out her life. I did appreciate her relationship with her grandmother, who seemed to be the primary stabilizing influence in her life. My adult granddaughter read the Kindle version after me while we were on a trip to Italy. Her comments were, "I can't believe you actually read this." I can't either.

I like this author's style -- just previous to this book, I read her novel titled The Orphan Train which was top notch. However, she misses the mark a bit here. The story has promise going in; Angela Russo is in her early thirties and unmarried. She has a good job that once challenged her creativity, but now she's feeling a bit lackluster and bored and would like to have some romance in her life. Enter online matchmaking and her life goes from boring to uh-oh in a big hurry. She's so taken with her budding online romance that she makes a huge blunder at work resulting in the loss of her job. Deciding to throw caution to the wind, Angela packs her car and heads north to Maine and into the arms of her new amour. I won't give away what happens next, but from this point on, other than the yummy sounding Italian recipes she shares, the story is a bit too formulaic and predictable. I think I will try some of those recipes, however!
